Physician Assistant - Urban Emergency Medicine
The Calgary Corridor Department of Emergency Medicine provides emergency medical care to patients across the four urban emergency departments in Calgary, Alberta, collectively managing approximately 300,000–350,000 patient visits annually. The successful applicant will join a supportive, collegial group of Emergency Physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. This is a shift-based 1.0 FTE position with rotating day, evening, night, and weekend shifts to sustain 24/7 acute service delivery.
Role Progression, Mentorship & Scope of Practice This position follows a structured, graduated clinical progression model designed to support long‑term professional development. The successful applicant will be supported with ongoing training and educational opportunities, including being paired with a longitudinal physician preceptor to assist in their transition and development in providing emergency department care. To build a strong procedural and operational baseline, the successful applicant will spend the first 2 years of employment working in a lower‑acuity section of the department known as "Fast Track".
This period focuses on advancing skills in common procedures—such as suturing, fracture reduction and casting, and comprehensive eye assessments (including slit lamp examination and ocular tonometry)—as well as mastering emergency department patient flow. Following this initial 2‑year foundation, the PA will gradually increase presentations, case acuity, and overall clinical responsibility across the emergency department.
Key Responsibilities:
Assess, formulate, and communicate diagnostic and treatment plans for patients presenting with undifferentiated acute medical, minor trauma, and surgical concerns. Conduct focused clinical histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic evaluations (laboratory, ECG, plain film, and point‑of‑care testing) across all age groups. Deliver care during the initial 2‑year period primarily within the "Fast Track" setting, developing expertise in department patient flow and procedural efficiencies.
Perform core minor emergency and specialty procedures, including:
Comprehensive eye assessments, slit lamp examination, ocular tonometry, and corneal/foreign body management. Orthopedic care, closed fracture reduction, joint immobilization, splinting, and casting. Simple and complex wound management, layered suturing, and tissue repair. Work under the longitudinal guidance of an assigned physician preceptor, participating in regular feedback, case reviews, and targeted clinical learning modules. Gradually transition into broader acute and multi‑system medical/surgical presentations, resuscitation support, and higher‑acuity patient volumes following the initial 2‑year period.
Facilitate continuity of care through prompt, clear charting in Connect Care (Epic), interdisciplinary handovers, consultant communications, and outpatient referral planning. Contribute to academic activities by providing bedside instruction, procedural demonstration, and clinical mentorship to Physician Assistant students rotating through the Emergency Department.
