Undergraduate Learning Services within the Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full‑time Limited Term RAO Engagement Coordinator for approximately 24 months.
The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) is a University of Calgary teaching and research facility, and community engagement site located approximately 20 km southwest of the Calgary city limits. Due to the remote location, a valid Class 5 driver's licence and access to a reliable personal vehicle are required.
This position plays a key role in advancing the public outreach and education mission of the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory. It is responsible for the design, delivery, and support of engaging educational programs and public events that communicate astrophysics concepts and inspire curiosity about science.
This position reports to the Manager, Undergraduate Learning Services, and operates under the direct supervision of the RAO Director(s)(s). It works 35 hours per week.
Summary ofKey Responsibilities Educational Programming and Outreach
- Design, deliver, and support presentations and demonstrations that highlight research conducted at the University of Calgary and current developments in astrophysics.
- Research and develop program themes and learning objectives informed by current astrophysics research, K‑12 curriculum, and best practices in science education and pedagogy.
- Continuously enhance educational approaches by exploring emerging trends in informal science learning and STEAM education.
- Represent the University of Calgary, the Faculty of Science, and the Department of Physics and Astronomy to the general public in a professional and engaging manner.
- Engage community groups, school groups, youth organizations, and diverse audiences in science education and outreach initiatives.
- Attend and support outreach activities such as science fairs, trade shows, and community events.
- Develop familiarity with Alberta science curricula (Grades 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and senior high) to support curriculum‑connected programming.
- Assist with all aspects of on‑site and event‑based programming, including operating telescopes, answering visitor questions, delivering presentations, and fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and enjoyable visitor experience.
- Support public and private events to ensure activities are delivered safely and smoothly.
- Support program operations including scheduling, preparation, and coordination with teachers, group organizers, and internal stakeholders.
- Collaborate with institutional business units to process invoicing, payments, ticket sales, accounts receivable, expense tracking, and prepare required risk management documentation for events.
- Ensure program requests and operational requirements are met in a timely and professional manner.
- Coordinate with Team Astro volunteer coordinators to support and further develop RAO's volunteer programs.
- Contribute to volunteer opportunities that provide students with meaningful educational and hands‑on experiences in science outreach.
- Maintain and expand knowledge of fundamental astrophysics and remain current with new discoveries and research developments relevant to public education.
- University Degree in Astronomy, Education, or a related Science field.
- Applicants with other relevant experience in educational programming, informal learning environments, or program administration, combined with appropriate experience and training, will be considered.
- Knowledge of fundamental astronomy and familiarity with telescope technology and operation is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in educational program design, delivery, and related administrative operations.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Experience with basic bookkeeping, scheduling, and general administrative support functions is an asset.
- Proven ability to explain scientific concepts clearly and engagingly to diverse audiences with varying levels of scientific background.
