Métis Education Consultant – Education, Training and Research

One (1) Full-time (40 hours/week), 12-month secondment or contract (with a possibility of extension)

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is looking for two Métis Education Consultants to join our Teaching and Learning team in the Edmonton office. Reporting to the Associate Director, ELCC and K-12 Initiatives, the Métis Education Consultants will support the design and implementation of professional learning opportunities, educational partnerships, and K-12 learning experiences across Alberta, in alignment with the Education, Training, and Research department’s mandate in Métis education.

This opportunity may be filled through either a one-year secondment or a salaried term contract. The department of Education, Training, and Research welcomes applications from qualified educators currently working in school divisions, as well as those working in community, nonprofit, consulting, or other educational settings.

This role offers a meaningful opportunity to advance Métis education, culture, and language revitalization across the province. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with school divisions, educators, communities, and partners to strengthen curriculum implementation and develop high-quality educational resources and programming.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, facilitate, and deliver professional learning for superintendents, system leaders, principals, and teachers at the national, provincial, and local levels.
  • Develop K-12 programming, lesson plans, educational supports, and culturally relevant resources grounded in Métis perspectives, sound pedagogical practice, and connection to Alberta curricula.
  • Partner with school divisions across Alberta to advance Métis education initiatives, learning opportunities, and services delivered under Métis Education Service Agreements (MESAs).
  • Create educational materials and implementation tools for current and emerging Education, Training, and Research courses.
  • Serve as a liaison with instructional teams, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community partners, and Métis communities, and cultivate relationships that support the co-development of authentic educational resources and learning experiences.
  • Represent Métis education as a member of various advisory boards, including:
    • ATA Indigenous Council
    • Alberta Professional Learning Consortium
    • College of Alberta School Superintendents (CASS) committees
  • Co-write and manage grants and contracts, including identifying funding opportunities and supporting timelines, deliverables, reporting, and budget oversight in collaboration with leadership.
  • Support events and initiatives within the department of Education, Training, and Research and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, including travel throughout Alberta as required.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of Métis identity, history, governance, culture, and language.
  • Understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, the Royal Commission of Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP), and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), particularly their implications for Alberta’s Teaching Quality Standard.
  • Experience in Indigenous education, curriculum development, and teaching, with a strong understanding of the Alberta education system and K-12 learning environments.
  • Ability to design and deliver high‑quality professional learning for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to develop culturally relevant, pedagogically sound educational resources.
  • Proven ability to build and sustain relationships with Knowledge Keepers, community leaders, educators, and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to listen carefully and respond thoughtfully to the diverse perspectives and needs of colleagues, partners, and learners.
  • Strong project management, organization, and time‑management skills.
