Job Title:
Metadata Specialist – Full‑time (35hrs/week), based primarily on campus. Eligible for Mount Royal University’s hybrid work program with up to one remote workday per week.
Reporting to the Manager, Collections & Content, the Metadata Specialist contributes to the development of metadata guidelines, projects, and initiatives in support of the Library’s Strategic Directions. They proactively identify opportunities to improve metadata, cataloguing, and resource discovery processes and propose solutions in consultation with the Manager and the Collections Services team. The role requires a high level of understanding of the collections and scholarly communications lifecycle in an academic environment and a collaborative, innovative approach to metadata to support the teaching and research needs of the campus community.
Responsibilities
Recommend and implement changes to metadata and cataloguing practices and system configurations to enhance integration, discoverability, and usability of library resources.
Support development and implementation of inclusive metadata practices to advance Indigenous reconciliation, equity, diversity, inclusion, justice, and accessibility.
Guide, coach, and mentor colleagues on metadata standards and best practices; act as an internal consultant and build shared expertise within the Collections Services team and across the Library.
Collaborate with faculty and staff on cross‑unit projects, including discovery tools, digital collections, and the Institutional Repository.
Catalogue and classify materials in various formats (including open access and electronic resources) according to current standards and guidelines, and engage in regional and national conversations around emerging best practices and technologies.
Collaborate on logging and resolving e‑resource access issues and contribute to ongoing review and maintenance of electronic and physical collections.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, plus a Master of Library and Information Science (or equivalent) or a Library Information Technology (or equivalent) diploma.
3‑5 years of experience in an academic library with a focus on collections and metadata.
Strong organizational, analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills with the ability to take initiative and work independently and collaboratively.
Advanced knowledge of MARC and non‑MARC metadata standards and schemas (e.g., RDA, Dublin Core, OAI, MODS, BIBFRAME/RDF, linked data).
Knowledge of equity, diversity, and inclusion practices to enhance descriptive cataloguing.
Experience training or mentoring colleagues in new skills or processes.
Experience with cataloguing and electronic resource management in both a library systems platform and an institutional repository.
Experience with Alma library systems platform and Primo discovery layer is an asset.
Salary
$60,571 – $76,640 per annum
