The Werklund School of Education Graduate Programs at the University of Calgary invites applications for a term certain Sessional Instructor position for Fall 2026 in Educational Research and Educational Psychology. Sessional instructors will teach online and on‑campus graduate courses that are integral parts of the graduate programs in the Werklund School of Education.

Term Dates: August 24 to December 18, 2026

Course Overview

This course aims to prepare doctoral students and novice researchers to master both theoretical understanding and practical application of mixed methods research (MMR). Students will engage in collaborative discourse about the theoretical stance and exemplary practice in designing and conducting mixed methods research in their field of study.

Students will be introduced to different types of mixed methods research designs and examples of empirical studies and methodological discussions published in peer‑reviewed journals that illustrate the application of each type.

At the end of the course, students will learn how to: explain the ontology, epistemology, and axiology that guide the selection of a mixed methods research design, evaluate the quality of a mixed methods empirical study in relation to their research topic or field of study, formulate and write a good mixed methods research problem and questions, select and justify their choice of a particular sampling approach, design quantitative and qualitative data collection tools, plan and outline the procedures for collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data, structure the methodology section of their own dissertation proposal or manuscript, report and write up mixed methods findings in an integrated way, and consider the issues of reliability and validity of each type of data.

Additionally, students will deepen their understanding of the benefits and challenges of conducting a mixed methods study, as well as the latest development of MMR.

Position Requirements

Educational Research consists of Educational Studies in Adult Learning, Curriculum and Learning, Language and Literacy, Leadership, and the Learning Sciences.

Desired Qualifications
  • A completed doctorate in education or a related area.
  • Evidence of successful teaching and leadership experience in school, university, or workplace settings.
  • Demonstrated experience in online/distance education.
  • Capacity to work effectively in a collaborative culture.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the graduate programs and specializations in Educational Research are considered assets.
