Position: Science Learning and Engagement Librarian (Sessional), Libraries and Cultural Resources

Description

Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) at the University of Calgary invites applications for a 12-month sessional librarian position at the rank of Assistant Librarian. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2026. The work location is Gallagher Library on the main campus.

Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) is a leader in the development of innovative information resources and services, locally, nationally and internationally. In a converged environment, it successfully incorporates the resources and services of libraries, institutional and research archives, rare books and special collections, art galleries, and a university press to provide outstanding support for scholarship, learning and the creation of knowledge.

Position

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Student Learning and Engagement, the Science Learning and Engagement Librarian will deliver outreach support, instruction and services for students, faculty and scholars in Earth Sciences, Energy Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy. The successful candidate will provide reference, consultation, instruction and research services in these disciplines and will collaborate with relevant colleagues in LCR as appropriate.

They may also assist in the collection and information resource development, as well as activities centered on digital learning engagement including supporting artificial intelligence learning in support of the research and teaching mission of the University of Calgary.

As an academic staff position, appropriate participation and involvement in teaching, service and scholarship is expected.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Adapts, develops and delivers specialized course-based instruction and workshops to students and scholars on topics related to the assigned areas. This will include the design and implementation of appropriate learning resources, and the strategic assessment of instruction and student learning outcomes.
  • Provides reference, referral and consultation services to support the use of resources, data, and other research and learning tools.
  • Engage with faculty, students and staff in assigned areas to promote and market library programs, services, and resources through unit, campus and other outreach opportunities.
  • Develops and maintains current knowledge of and trends in resources, tools and other areas related to the position including but not limited to the impact of scholarly communications, open access, web archiving, research impact, knowledge synthesis, and artificial intelligence in the assigned disciplines.
  • Supports research grant applications and funded projects as required.
  • Advise on data management and retention, and research impact as needed.
  • Participates in collection and scholarly resource development in assigned discipline areas.
  • Contributes to the collaborative delivery of library services to faculty, students, and staff through team teaching, resource sharing, committee service, and participation in collaborative projects.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship or a recognized equivalent.
  • Strong service orientation and experience or training in delivering library instruction.
  • Evidence of the ability to plan and implement programming and outreach for participants from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Interest in implementing new initiatives and in evaluating current practices.
  • Aptitude for quickly learning and adopting new technologies related to areas of professional practice.
  • Ability to operate within a complex work environment, working both independently and with a team setting.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team member in a dynamic environment and on a variety of simultaneous projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, manage time wisely, and make quick effective decisions in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills.
