Rundle College is looking for a dedicated School Counsellor who will work closely with the school Principals and Student Services team to help students in the areas of personal/social growth, academic guidance and executive functioning support in Kindergarten to Grade 6. The School Counsellor will engage with students, parents, staff and other stakeholders to support each student in achieving their potential.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Initiates and coordinates brief, solution-focused counselling for students.
- Leads social emotional learning program, designing small group and individualized SEL learning experiences that target the needs of our student population.
- Work in collaboration with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other professionals to discuss student issues, decide approaches to best resolve problems, and determine priorities for resource needs for students.
- Maintains accurate and complete documentation in accordance with legislation, regulations and policies.
- Coordinate events that benefit students and foster mental health and wellness.
- Keeps abreast of current community resources and determines how these resources may be beneficial to the student and family.
- Implements best practices in accordance with legislation and policies that relate to students and families, such as child protection/child abuse, inclusive education, attendance, and privacy.
- Contributes to positive school culture through involvement in the co-curricular program, student life activities and general school life, including after-school and evening events.
- Offers training and resources related to mental health, social emotional development, and aspects of executive functioning to teachers and parents.
- Performs supervision and staff coverage duties when assigned by administration.
- Master’s Degree in related fields such as counselling, social sciences or educational psychology is preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a school counsellor or supporting children with social-emotional / executive functioning concerns in an educational setting.
- Demonstrated competencies in the domain of behaviour and mental health of children, particularly Kindergarten to grade 6 children.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team.
- Excellent engagement and skills when working with students one-on-one, in small groups and in large groups.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions and take initiative when circumstances require.
- Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.
- Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to staff and student privacy.
- Technical and communication skills are necessary to engage with stakeholders.
- Experience working with restorative practices is preferred.
