Position: Sessional Instructor: SCIE 501, Natural Sciences Program, Faculty of Science

Job Description

The Natural Sciences Program within the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Fall 2026 Term Sessional Instructor. The successful candidate will teach SCIE 501 in the Fall 2026 session with responsibilities for lecture instruction, meetings with the teaching team, scoring assessments, and other associated duties for this 3‑unit course during the term.

Course Overview

Science 501 – Project Course in Natural Science. This course acts as the capstone experience for Natural Sciences students, intended to achieve integration and interdisciplinarity within the Natural Sciences program.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • critically analyze current research and developments in a scientific topic, evaluating significance and identifying limitations;
  • apply principles of ethical and responsible research design to propose a project that addresses a scientific problem and social contexts;
  • communicate ideas and concepts effectively in written, visual, and oral presentations to peers and to create a bridge between scientific research and society;
  • collaborate in multidisciplinary teams, provide feedback to peers, and reflect on their learning in this course, in their degree, and in the future.
Term Dates & Delivery

Fall 2026 Term Dates:
Monday, 24 Aug 2026 – Thursday, 24 Dec 2026.

Delivery Mode:
All course components will be delivered in person.

Mo We Fr 15:00 – 15:50.

Qualifications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Preference to candidates with a Ph.D. in a scientific discipline or with evidence of previous post‑secondary teaching experience and effectiveness.
  • Experience with the Desire 2 Learn (D2L) course‑management system, knowledge of best practices for assessments, and techniques for engaging students considered assets.
Compensation & Conditions

Remuneration is calculated according to the Collective Agreement, Schedule B. The appointment is governed by the collective agreement between the Faculty Association of the University of Calgary and the Governors of the University of Calgary.
