Position: Sessional Instructor: BCEM 471, Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science

Description

The Department of Biological Sciences within the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Fall 2026 Term BCEM 471 Sessional Instructor, with a start date of Aug 1, 2026. The successful candidate will be responsible for instruction of one-third (12 lectures) of the course and for offering and running some tutorials.

Course Details

BCEM 471 – Physical Biochemistry covers the laws of thermodynamics in biological systems, including the hydrophobic effect, properties of water, electrolyte solutions, ligand binding, and optical spectroscopic methods (UV/Vis, fluorescence, IR) as applied to biological molecules.

Teaching

Schedule:

Mon, Wed, Fri 15:00–15:50

Responsibilities
  • Instruction of 12 lectures and selected tutorials
  • Preparation of lecture materials and assessment
  • Participation in departmental meetings and curriculum development
  • Timely submission of grades to the Office of the Academic Registrar
Qualifications
  • Minimum MSc in a biological science (PhD preferred)
  • Expertise in quantum mechanics for biochemists, including harmonic oscillator, atomic and molecular wave functions, FEM models for conjugate systems, and Huckel model for UV/Vis spectra
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and previous teaching experience, preferably in this or related course
