Humane Education Facilitator

Reporting to the Manager of Humane Education, the facilitators’ primary role will be to facilitate Calgary Humane Society’s (CHS) educational programs for students in kindergarten to grade 12 and adults of all ages. The facilitators will also assist in other departments, such as Reception, Animal Care, or Volunteer, etc., as necessary. The purposes of the CHS Educational programs are to build community awareness, to educate in the areas of responsible pet ownership, the humane treatment of animals, empathy, and compassion for the animals in our community, and the link between violence towards animals and bullying in children and more.

Our Humane Education programs work to educate children, youth and adults about animal welfare as well as ways to get involved with CHS. This role will work collaboratively with all departments at CHS, to provide excellent customer service and build and maintain strong relationships with members of the community and Calgary educators/classrooms, by promoting the mission and values of CHS.

Tuesday – Saturday, 9 – 5pm and 11 – 7pm

Salary
$36,367.50 per year, increased to $40,170.00 upon successful completion of the probationary period

Duties

Implement strategic educational programming that promotes awareness of CHS’s mission and vision, that align with the Alberta Program of Studies and Curriculum.

Successfully deliver educational programs and activities for Calgary students and classrooms (students in the classroom, at the shelter, and in the community). Programs include field trips, classroom presentations, group tours, and online teaching resources amongst others.

Help develop, update, and maintain department presentations, ensuring accuracy and keeping information up to date and engaging for students, while maintaining high standards of quality and consistency.

Create new educational opportunities for students in kindergarten to Grade twelve, to teach about animal welfare, proper pet care, one health and the five freedoms/domains of animal welfare.

Support the booking, registration and scheduling of all department programs and activities.

Transfer necessary information from bookings into schedules/calendars, organizing and maintaining communication with relevant team members.

Maintain supplies and inventory for education programs used in Field Trips and Presentations and communicate/shop for restock as necessary.

Assist in the organization, scheduling and implementation of camps, clubs, birthday parties, community group tours, and other Humane Education programs.

Co-supervise Humane Education programming and running programs as necessary.

Collaborate with the second Humane Education Facilitator to plan and schedule Summer Camps and create training resources for Camp Counsellors and volunteers.

Seek opportunities to promote CHS and Humane Education programs at community events in order to strengthen relationships with sponsors, donors, and other key stakeholders.

Represent CHS at public meetings and community events and strive to build positive relationships between the Society and members of the public.

Initiate and maintain positive relationships with educational institutions and other community partners.

Assist the Manager with the development of department manuals, processes, and policies as assigned.

Send, compile, analyze, and report feedback from participant and/or community surveys.

Responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of Calgary Humane Society’s Learning Center, Education Hub, crates and tools that we use, as well as being responsible for all other areas where we work, including checking washrooms after a camp group has used them, mopping out rooms where we’ve hosted an animal guest, etc.

Position Requirements

Flexibility to work a rotating schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and some statutory holidays

A Diploma or Degree in Education or a related field is considered an asset

Ability to motivate, inspire, and provide leadership, guidance, and feedback to all age groups is necessary

Proven experience working with youth and delivering effective and relatable presentations / workshops
