The Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary invites applications for term certain Sessional Instructor positions for the Winter 2027 term in Educational Psychology. Sessional instructors will teach online and on campus graduate courses that are integral parts of the graduate programs in the Werklund School of Education.

EDPS 687 - Child and Adolescent Counselling

Delivery: In person on campus

This course is designed to help students acquire foundational knowledge and skills relevant to theory, research, and practice in child and adolescent counselling and psychotherapy. This course is designed to provide students with basic knowledge and understanding of different psychotherapy theories and techniques, with the focus on evidence-based treatments for a range of child and adolescent disorders and conditions. Through didactic teaching from scientists and practitioners, interactive and discussion-based learning, as well as hands-on practice of skills, students will leave this course with enhanced understanding of the practice of child and adolescent counselling and psychotherapy.

Students will learn and practice rudimentary counseling skills, including, active listening, and paraphrasing and reflecting feelings within a framework that encourages the development of a working alliance in the therapeutic relationship. Students will also have enhanced skills in case conceptualization, treatment planning, implementing and evaluating interventions, all of which are critical for effective intervention. Lastly, students will also learn and practice interviewing skills in the context to childhood issues.

Position Requirements

Educational Psychology: Educational Psychology consists of Educational Studies in Counselling Psychology and in School and Applied Child Psychology.

Desired qualifications include

• A completed doctorate in psychology or a related field, registration as a psychologist.
• Evidence of successful teaching and leadership experience in workplace, university or school settings.
• Demonstrated experience in online/distance education for courses delivered online or in a blended format.
• Capacity to work effectively in a collaborative culture.
• Knowledge and understanding of the programs and specializations in Educational Psychology will also be considered as assets for the sessional teaching positions.
