POSITION TITLE: Mental Health Facilitator – Community Education and Wellness

DEPARTMENT: Community Programs

POSITION TYPE: Full

HOURS OF WORK: 35 hours per week

JOB SUMMARY

The Mental Health Facilitator – Community Education and Wellness is responsible for the delivery of ongoing recovery-orientated and awareness-based education sessions in the community, and virtually. Offered to children, youth, emerging adult, and adult groups, education sessions will support individuals in building personal recovery and resiliency, will utilize contemporary prevention education strategies, and will result in an increased knowledge of mental health concepts and improved help-seeking behaviors amongst youth and adult participants.

REPORTS TO: Program Manager – Community Education and Wellness

Service Responsibilities
  • Deliver in-person and virtual youth education sessions in the community for middle, junior, and senior high schools and various local youth service providers, as well as onsite at CMHA Calgary.
  • Deliver in-person and virtual education sessions for adult learners.
  • Continually review best practices and new findings in the fields of youth engagement, mental health, recovery, resiliency, stress management, supportive skills, and suicide prevention.
  • Monitor program effectiveness, identify necessary content changes, tailor activities to involve a variety of group sizes, and utilize curriculum to meet the unique needs of targeted populations.
  • Collaborate with Curriculum Developer and Community Education staff to monitor program effectiveness, identify necessary content changes, and tailor activities and learning materials to meet diverse delivery needs.
  • Collaborate with other organizational staff such as Peer Support Workers, Recovery Trainers, Communications Designers, and participants in the development and delivery of cross-programmatic educational content, presentations, and learning materials.
  • Maintain program data entry in a manner that is timely and meets established agency standards.
  • Provide occasional support for community events, wellness fairs, and information sessions.
Skills And Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree in a human services area (education, psychology, social work, nursing, public health, sociology).
  • Three years related experience, or an equivalent combination.
  • Thorough understanding of issues related to youth, workplace wellness, mental health education, community capacity building, resiliency, and supports for people with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction concerns.
  • Demonstration of strong collaborative and relationship-building skills with key stakeholders and community supporters.
  • Cultural competency in working with diverse groups.
  • Knowledge of principals of youth engagement, with excellent group facilitation techniques, classroom management strategies, and communication skills towards youth, emerging adults, and adult learners.
  • Strong skills for virtual facilitation, including knowledge surrounding the functions and operations of various online platforms, and adaptation of activities for virtual delivery.
  • A deep commitment to the recovery model, harm reduction philosophy, strengths based and empowerment approaches, along with solid upstream prevention and promotion thinking.
Additional Requirements
  • A valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel across Calgary and surrounding communities for session delivery is required.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including daytime, evenings, and weekends is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Zoom is required.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and previous experience working with individuals in crisis or experiencing suicidal feelings is required.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training, CPR and First Aid training are considered assets.
  • Lived experience of mental health, and/or substance use concerns are considered assets.
