Overview

A Waste Characterization and Pricing Specialist is an environmental professional responsible for identifying, quantifying, and analyzing waste materials to determine proper handling, disposal methods, and associated costs. This role involves ensuring regulatory compliance and optimizing waste management efficiency. This is a dual-function role responsible for scientifically identifying and classifying waste materials to ensure safe, compliant disposal and for analyzing market data to establish profitable and competitive service pricing.

Responsibilities

Key duties are split between waste management operations and financial analysis:

  • Conduct Audits and Assessments: Perform site assessments and waste audits to collect data and evaluate existing waste generation and management practices.
  • Identify and Classify Materials: Identify, verify, and classify various waste streams, including municipal, industrial, and hazardous waste, ensuring accurate characterization, and if waste is hazardous based on characteristics like ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, and toxicity.
  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Monitor and ensure all waste handling and disposal activities comply with local, provincial, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., RPRA)
  • Logistics & Documentation: Coordinating the necessary documentation (e-manifests, tracking reports) for the safe movement and disposal of waste materials.
  • Provide Technical Support: Serve as an internal point of contact for waste characterization requirements and provide technical guidance on waste regulations and disposal options.
  • Document and Report: Prepare and maintain detailed records, documentation, and reports related to waste management activities for internal review and regulatory bodies.
  • Analyze Market and Competitor Data: Conduct thorough market analysis to evaluate pricing trends, competitor strategies, and customer demand to identify opportunities and risks.
  • Manage Final Disposal Vendor Relationships: Establish working relationships with end disposal facilities. Negotiate favourable pricing and contracts with disposal vendors and identifying cost-reduction opportunities through efficient waste management practices.
  • Develop Pricing Strategies and Models: Establish and implement pricing guidelines and models that align with business objectives, maximize profitability, and remain competitive.
  • Evaluate Cost and Profitability: Analyze costs of waste handling/disposal, customer data, and sales data to determine optimal pricing structures and assess profitability.
  • Implement and Adjust Pricing: Recommend and implement price changes and coordinate with sales and billing departments to ensure changes are accurately applied in ERP systems (e.g., Navusoft).
  • Collaborate and Communicate: Work with cross-functional teams (sales, marketing, finance) to ensure alignment on pricing strategies and provide reporting to stakeholders and senior management.
Essential Qualifications
  • Education: Post-secondary Diploma/Degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, or related field is required.
  • Experience: 2 – 5 years’ experience in waste management, environmental compliance, or pricing analysis roles is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to review and interpret laboratory data and SDS sheets and apply it to waste characterization and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and business intelligence (BI) tools, as well as database and spreadsheet programs.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with internal teams, vendors, clients, and regulatory agencies.
