Role

The Senior Materials R&D Engineer will focus on supporting the development of new liquid cooling technologies by evaluating and validating new materials, alloys, and manufacturing technologies in the context of direct liquid cooling operating conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Lead applied materials and metallurgical R&D for liquid cooling devices, driving material selection, innovation, and performance trade-offs for next‑generation AI computing systems.
  • Design and execute experimental test programs to evaluate materials, joints, coatings, and surface treatments under high heat flux, thermal cycling, pressure, and coolant exposure.
  • Investigate materials‑related failures and anomalies in prototypes and early builds, performing root cause analysis and translating findings into design and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, R&D, and manufacturing engineers to co‑develop cooling hardware concepts, ensuring materials considerations are embedded early in the design cycle.
  • Explore and qualify new materials, alloys, and manufacturing technologies that improve thermal performance, reliability, or scalability of liquid cooling solutions.
  • Document research findings and communicate technical recommendations to guide product architecture, design decisions, and future R&D roadmaps.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in materials or metallurgical R&D.
  • Experience with application‑specific materials characterization such as defining chemical compatibility/interactions, erosion‑corrosion thresholds, physical properties, etc.
  • Practical experience with materials manufacturing, forming, and bonding.
  • Extensive hands‑on experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with mechanical and thermal engineers to influence component design, material specs, and validation plans.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write reports and present technical concepts to diverse internal and external audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or PhD with a relevant specialization is preferred.
  • R&D experience involving thermal management or fluid‑exposed systems.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, fabrication equipment, instrumentation, data acquisition, modification, and physical testing of prototypes.
  • Familiarity with CAD tools such as SOLIDWORKS for designing components or fixtures for testing.
