Summary

Reporting to the Technical Services Manager the Sr. Surface Engineer will lead project design, planning, and execution while ensuring safety, compliance, and timely delivery that align with business objectives. Your contributions will help ensure ongoing success of Keno Hill’s ability to operate in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

About Us

The Keno Hill mine, located within the Keno Hill Silver District in Canada’s Yukon Territory, is one of the highest-grade silver districts in the world, situated 350 kilometres north of Whitehorse, and lies within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na‑Cho Nyak Dun. It comprises 242 square kilometres (km2) with numerous mineral deposits and more than 35 historical past‑producing mine sites.

Keno Hill is expected to produce ~3.0 million ounces of silver in 2026.

The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Here’s what you can expect in this role:
  • Project Oversight
    :
    Lead and manage multiple surface engineering projects, focusing on the design and construction of Dry Stack Tailings, Stockpiles, and structures ensuring that projects are completed safely, efficiently, and within budget.
  • Design and Planning
    :
    Collaborate with internal and external engineering teams to review and optimize designs for surface infrastructure, including tailings storage, stockpile management, drainage systems, and considering permafrost‑related challenges.
  • Project Management
    :
    Develop and oversee project schedules, resource allocation, budgeting, and cost control to ensure projects are completed on time and meet financial targets.
  • Compliance & Safety
    :
    Ensure adherence to all environmental regulations, safety protocols, and company standards during project execution. Conduct safety audits and oversee environmental compliance.
  • Risk Management & Problem Solving
    :
    Identify and mitigate technical, financial, and environmental risks, especially those related to permafrost and the unique challenges of working in cold climates.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    :
    Build and maintain positive relationships with local communities, regulatory agencies, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution and regulatory compliance.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers, planners, and EITs within the team as necessary.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Provide support to foster a strong safety culture, promoting and exemplifying safe work practices throughout the organization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related discipline.
  • Must be eligible to register as a P.Eng in the Yukon Territory.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in civil engineering, preferably in mining or heavy industrial environments.
  • Strong foundation in site infrastructure design and construction, earthworks, grading, drainage, road design, and construction management.
  • Experience in the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and structural facilities, including foundations, steel and concrete structures, and building envelopes.
  • Experience in construction management (CM) or project management (PM) roles, with the ability to oversee building and infrastructure projects from planning through to completion.
  • Familiarity with building codes, structural standards, and permitting processes relevant to industrial and remote site construction.
  • Experience with permafrost or Arctic climate conditions is highly desirable, particularly in the design and construction of buildings and civil infrastructure in cold‑weather environments.
  • Familiarity with water management structures, surface infrastructure construction, and regulatory permitting in a mining context is an asset.
