What you will do
Imperial Oil is currently looking to hire a Senior Mine Reclamation & Closure Planner to provide subject matter expertise for reclamation and closure planning at the Kearl oilsands site. This role will be office based and located in Calgary, initially. Relocation to Edmonton will be a requirement in approximately mid-2028. Occasional travel to Kearl will be encouraged.
This role is accountable for mine reclamation and closure planning across the full asset lifecycle, from early conceptual studies through detailed design, regulatory approval, and execution during operations. The role plays a critical stewardship function by ensuring closure objectives are integrated into mine planning, regulatory obligations are met, and long‑term reclamation liabilities are responsibly managed.
Key areas of accountability include:
Ownership of the Life‑of‑Mine Closure Plan, including development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of associated closure cost and liability estimates.Leadership of reclamation stockpile and closure landform design, from conceptual studies through detailed engineering, ensuring technical robustness and regulatory alignment.Planning and technical validation of annual reclamation programs, including soil survey programs, seed collection, material geochemical characterization, soil salvage, and permanent reclamation placement.Technical leadership for regulatory applications, submissions, and reporting.Integration of reclamation and closure considerations into long‑range mine planning, including participation in continuous improvement studies and mine plan optimization initiatives.Additional responsibilities may include:
Development, review, and maintenance of internal standards, guidelines, and technical practices.Representing Imperial in industry working groups and external forums.This role will execute work both directly and through technical oversight of work performed by internal teams and external consultants. The position is dynamic and iterative, requiring strong problem‑solving skills, sound engineering judgment, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
A successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills, and the ability to work effectively across disciplines to deliver integrated solutions. Experience and/or knowledge of mining operations and provincial and federal regulatory frameworks is considered an asset.

BSc in a relevant field10+ years of relevant experience in reclamation and closure related rolesStrong understanding of reclamation and closure planning and designDemonstrated competencies in soils, surface water, groundwater, vegetation, wildlife, mine planning and closureAbility to lead technical scope for reclamation and closure components of multi‑disciplinary projectsAbility to independently frame problems, evaluate alternatives, and make sound engineering recommendationsProven ability to communicate and collaborate across engineering, operations, planning, and regulatory functionsStrong organizational, planning, and practical problem‑solving skills, supported by critical thinking and continuous improvementSelf‑motivated, able to work with a high degree of autonomy while remaining aligned with broader team objectivesPreferred Qualifications/ Experience
