Process Safety Engineer (Contract) – Calgary, AB Role Summary
The Process Safety Engineer provides technical safety support to engineering and operations teams, with a focus on hazard identification, risk assessment, and ensuring process changes are managed safely. This role delivers day‑to‑day expertise in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Management of Change (MOC), and process safety risk management for ongoing operations and capital projects.
Key Responsibilities- Lead, facilitate, or participate in PHAs including HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, and What‑If reviews.
- Support and review MOC submissions to ensure process safety risks are identified, assessed, and controlled.
- Conduct process safety risk assessments and recommend engineered and administrative safeguards.
- Provide technical input on process safety requirements, design reviews, and operating procedures.
- Participate in or lead root cause investigations for process safety events and develop corrective actions.
- Support implementation and continuous improvement of Process Safety Management (PSM) systems.
- Review process safety documentation including P&IDs, cause‑and‑effect matrices, relief system design, and hazardous area classifications.
- Monitor process safety performance indicators and identify trends or emerging risks.
- Provide technical guidance on fire protection, loss prevention, and industry standards (API, NFPA, CSA).
- Interface with engineering, operations, maintenance, and project teams to ensure process safety requirements are met.
- 8–10+ years of experience in operations, process engineering, or technical safety
. - Strong background in PHA, MOC, and process safety risk assessment
. - Experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, or heavy industrial operations.
- Engineering degree in Chemical, Process, Mechanical, or related discipline (preferred but not mandatory).
- Eligibility for professional registration (APEGA) considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of PSM elements, process safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience supporting operations in a technical capacity (design, troubleshooting, risk reviews, incident investigations).
