The Engineering Manager is a senior, hands‑on leadership role within the manufacturing plant, providing day‑to‑day technical leadership and oversight across Engineering, Manufacturing, Research & Development, and Facilities Engineering. This role maintains a strong presence on the shop floor and in the test bay, ensuring engineering decisions support safe, efficient, and high‑quality production while meeting customer and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will hold a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation and bring extensive experience in industrial or heavy manufacturing environments, with a practical, solutions‑focused approach to engineering leadership.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Hands‑On Engineering & Technical Leadership- Actively participate in engineering work, including design reviews, troubleshooting, and day‑to‑day technical support for manufacturing and assembly operations.
- Provide direct engineering support to production, test bay, maintenance, and quality teams to resolve real‑time technical issues.
- Review, approve, and oversee engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and engineering change requests, within the scope of the applicable professional designation.
- Oversee and support the design, modification, and continuous improvement of centrifugal and reciprocating pumps, including engineered‑to‑order products.
- Ensure all designs meet customer requirements, applicable codes and standards (API, ASME, ISO), and internal manufacturing capabilities.
- Support and lead root cause investigations related to non‑conformances, test failures, and field performance issues.
- Work closely with Manufacturing and Operations leadership to improve processes, tooling, assembly methods, and work instructions.
- Support production layouts, routings, and the introduction of new or revised products into manufacturing.
- Participate in and lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, reliability, and safety.
- Provide engineering oversight and support for plant equipment, infrastructure, and facilities‑related improvements.
- Assist with equipment upgrades, layout changes, and small‑ to mid‑scale capital projects.
- Support long‑term equipment reliability and plant capability through practical engineering solutions.
- Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements in Alberta.
- Actively promote and model a safety‑first culture as a core leadership responsibility.
- Support audits, inspections, ISO compliance programs, and internal quality initiatives as required.
- Provide day‑to‑day supervision, coordination, and technical guidance to engineers, technologists, and designers.
- Set engineering priorities, assign work, monitor progress, and ensure alignment with production schedules and operational needs.
- Support training, mentoring, and professional development of junior team members through hands‑on coaching.
- Oversee compliance with APEGA requirements, including professional practice and engineering governance expectations.
- Support engineering program improvement initiatives focused on reliability, standardization, and execution.
- Contribute to project planning and execution, ensuring engineering deliverables support cost, schedule, and quality objectives.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, and Leadership teams.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation (required).
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or heavy equipment environment.
- Prior experience in a lead, supervisory, or managerial role.
- Strong background in rotating equipment; experience with centrifugal and/or reciprocating pumps is strongly preferred.
- Solid understanding of machining, assembly, testing, and manufacturing workflows.
- Comfortable working hands‑on in a production environment and maintaining a regular shop‑floor presence.
- Practical, solutions‑focused engineering mindset.
- Strong hands‑on troubleshooting and problem‑solving capability.
- Confident leader who can guide and supervise without excessive bureaucracy.
- Clear, effective communicator across trades, engineers, supervisors, and operations staff.
- Organized, dependable, and technically grounded.
