Position Summary
Working under the guidance of senior engineering and management staff, the Mechanical Engineering Technologist / QA-QC Coordinator will support engineering, fabrication, and quality assurance activities across a variety of mining, oil sands, and industrial projects. The successful candidate will assist with:
- Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs)
- Turnover and quality documentation packages
- Welding qualification documentation
- Quality system development
- Mechanical design and drafting using Solid Works
- Client compliance requirements
- Fabrication quality control processes

Key Responsibilities- Quality Assurance & Quality Control
- Assist in developing and maintaining Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) to meet client and project requirements.
- Prepare project quality documentation, turnover packages, and Manufacturing Data Record Books (MDRs).
- Maintain quality records, traceability systems, and document control processes.
- Assist with Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), corrective actions, and quality investigations.
- Coordinate inspection activities including welding inspections, dimensional inspections, NDE activities, and final acceptance inspections.
- Support client audits and compliance reviews.
- Assist with ABSA, ASME, CWB, and customer quality requirements.
- Support development and maintenance of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and welder qualification records.
- Work with clients to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality requirements.
- Engineering & Design
- Create and revise mechanical drawings and assemblies using Solid Works.
- Support design and detailing of fabricated assemblies, wear products, piping systems, and industrial equipment.
- Create Bills of Materials (BOMs) and maintain engineering documentation.
- Support drawing revisions, as-built documentation, and engineering change management.
- Work closely with fabrication personnel to resolve manufacturing and design issues.
- Continuous Improvement
- Assist with development and expansion of Foothills Steel's quality systems and procedures.
- Support implementation of best practices for fabrication quality and documentation control.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives throughout the organization.
- One of the following:
- Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma (SAIT, NAIT, or equivalent)
- Mechanical Engineering Degree
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT)
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- Required
- 0–5 years of relevant experience in engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, construction, quality control, or industrial environments.
- Experience through co-op placements, internships, fabrication shops, industrial projects, or construction environments is valuable.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Experience with Solid Works or similar 3D CAD software.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Interest in welding, fabrication, quality systems, and industrial manufacturing.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation.
- Preferred
- CWB Welding Inspector Level 1 certification or willingness to obtain certification within 12 months of employment.
- CWB Welding Inspector Level 2 considered an asset.
- ISO 9001 quality system or internal auditor training.
- Experience with welding processes including GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SMAW, and RMD.
- Familiarity with CSA W47.1, CSA W59, ASME standards, ASTM material specifications, ABSA pressure equipment requirements.
- Oil Sands, mining, pressure piping, steel fabrication, or heavy industrial experience.
- CGSB VT, MT, or PT certifications considered an asset.
