Power Engineer – Limited Term (1 year)
Reporting to the Supervisor Central Plant, the Power Engineer performs work essential to the ongoing repair, operation and maintenance of the university’s base building HVAC systems. The position is full‑time, with an average shift of 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, and requires scheduling in an on‑call rotation for afternoon, weekend, statutory holidays and other required shifts.
Responsibilities- Support of HVAC systems and equipment (40%): complete HVAC system and equipment requests, respond to urgent issues, maintain, operate and troubleshoot HVAC systems across the campus, including base building HVAC, remote heating plant(s), CHP cogeneration plant and solar panel systems, provide water treatment testing/analysis, manage hydronic systems, maintain lab service HVAC equipment, review performance reports, execute regular inspections, work with contractors on specialized maintenance, install new equipment, replace or repair deteriorated equipment, read and interpret drawings, notify Supervisor of unusual conditions, provide event support, coordinate work with other trades and prioritize work orders.
- Preventative Maintenance Program (40%): perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs per schedule, assist with code on‑site inspections, support leadership and colleagues in determining schedules and procedures per manufacturer recommendations and industry best practices.
- Support of Facilities Management (20%): assist the project management department with scoping HVAC‑related work for future capital planning upgrades, investigate shutdown/start‑up procedures for projects, collect data to support asset management, maintain single line diagrams, master drawings, legend and schedules, and use the Computerized Maintenance Management System (Archibus) to complete work requests and preventative maintenance.
- 4th Class Power Engineering ABSA Certificate (required). 3rd Class Power Engineering ABSA Certificate is an asset.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in commercial, industrial, and institutional power engineering applications.
- Experience and training with base building power engineering system repairs, maintenance, operation and safety procedures.
- Knowledge of building codes, regulations and standards related to ABSA power engineering systems.
- Proficiency with relevant information and tracking systems and business productivity tools (e.g., Microsoft Office).
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to interact respectfully with colleagues, contractors and the university community.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, shop drawings, specifications and maintenance manuals.
- Ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple activities under time pressure.
- Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, flexibility, creativity, and attention to detail and accuracy.

Salary: $64,252.50 – $81,295.50 per annum ($66,183.00 – $83,733.00 per annum effective July 1, 2026)
