About the job
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Mechanical Construction Estimator to join our growing team. In this role, you will prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates for commercial mechanical systems. Your scope will cover HVAC, plumbing, and heating projects ranging from $1M to $15M+.
The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical skills, extensive knowledge of mechanical building codes, and a proven track record of contributing to profitable commercial contracts. You are a self-starter who learns quickly, stays motivated, and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities- Take-offs & Quantities:
Perform comprehensive digital take-offs for HVAC, plumbing, sheet metal, and piping systems using industry software - Cost Estimation:
Calculate detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead - Proposal Analysis:
Review project blueprints, architectural drawings, and structural specifications to identify scope gaps and potential risks - Vendor Management:
Solicit, review, and negotiate quotes from subcontractors, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers to ensure competitive pricing - Value Engineering:
Identify cost-saving opportunities and present alternatives without compromising system integrity - Collaboration:
Work closely with project managers, engineers, general contractors, and clients during pre-construction and project handoffs - Database Maintenance:
Maintain and update estimating software, historical cost data, and labor productivity rates
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent field experience/journeyman ticket) - Experience:
Minimum of 3–5+ years of experience estimating ICI (industrial, commercial, and institutional) mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, heating) - Software Proficiency:
Advanced experience with mechanical estimating software such as Procore, Trimble Estimation/Quick Pen, and Bluebeam Revu - Industry Knowledge:
Strong understanding of commercial mechanical codes and standards, including NBC (Alberta), City of Calgary Commercial Building Codes, CSA, SMACNA, and ASHRAE guidelines - Analytical
Skills:
Strong mathematical aptitude, high attention to detail, and the ability to conceptualize 3D systems from 2D drawings - Communication:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for negotiating with vendors and presenting bids to clients and stakeholders - Self-motivated, proactive, and able to quickly learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment
- Monday to Friday
- 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM or 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- Overtime may be required based on project demands
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle required
- Travel to project sites including:
Calgary, Banff, Strathmore, Crossfield, High River - Mileage reimbursement provided for work‑related travel
- Competitive salary: $70,000 – $90,000 per year
