Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Lead Piping/Pipeline Engineer on projects from concept through detailed engineering and construction support.
  • Establish piping design philosophy, execution plans, and discipline work processes.
  • Lead development, provide input, review, and approval of:
    • Material Selection Diagrams (MSD) and Material Selection Reports (MSR)
    • Piping Instrumentation Diagram (P&IDs)
    • Design Basis (DBM)
    • Line Designation Tables (LDT)
    • Piping specifications for carbon and stainless steel, alloy, CRA, lined piping
    • Line classes, insulation, heat tracing, and corrosion allowances
    • Valve specifications
    • Piping isometric and general arrangement drawings
    • Pipeline alignment sheets
    • Material requisitions (MR) and technical bid evaluation (TBE)
    • Specialty item data sheets and lists
    • Tie-in lists
  • Ensure piping systems are properly designed for a variety of fluids and pressure/temperature conditions, including:
    • Steam distribution, gathering lines and steam facility piping
    • Emulsion, produced water, and diluent systems
    • Blowdown, relief, and flare piping
    • Produced and fuel gas
    • Sweet and other service
    • High pressure and elevated temperature service
    • Utility piping
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to manage corrosion and erosion risks common to SAGD facilities and gas plants.
  • Perform pipe wall thickness and hydrotest pressure calculations.
  • Update project schedule weekly, marking tasks completed, in progress, or delayed.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor Piping Engineering procedures and standards.
  • Attend status meetings with clients, project management, and suppliers.
  • Support, coordinate, and issue ABSA applications.
  • Authenticate documentation with a professional engineering stamp as required.
  • Lead, mentor, and technically supervise junior and intermediate piping engineers.
  • Develop engineering man‑hour estimates, resource loading, and forecasting for piping projects and tasks.
  • Allocate resources and manage discipline workload to meet project milestones.
  • Control budget, schedule, and change management across multiple projects.
  • Conduct technical reviews and provide coaching to ensure consistent engineering quality.
  • Coordinate piping scope with process, mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.
  • Act as the primary technical interface with clients for piping‑related matters.
  • Support staff performance reviews and training.
  • Assist with business development.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in HAZOPs, constructability, and model review sessions.
  • Review vendor data, technical bid evaluations, and piping‑related procurement packages.
  • Support modularization strategies and field execution planning.
  • Experience supporting proposals and man‑hour estimates.
  • Coordinate design activities with Process, Piping Stress, Mechanical, Supply Chain, and Project Management.
  • Provide engineering support during fabrication, installation, commissioning, and start‑up.
  • Assist with change management, technical queries, and field engineering support.
  • Build strong client relationships.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, including:
    • ASME B31.3
    • CSA Z662 for above‑ground pipelines and piping systems
    • Applicable API Codes, ASME Section VIII, and client specifications
  • Ensure designs meet company QA/QC, safety, and regulatory requirements of ABSA, TCBC, TSASK, and other provinces as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA
  • 12+ years of piping engineering experience, with significant SAGD and gas plant project exposure
  • Proven experience as a Lead or Discipline Engineer on EPC projects
  • Strong background in:
    • High‑temperature and cryogenic piping systems
    • Piping materials and corrosion management
    • Valves
  • Working knowledge of welding procedures, procedure qualification
  • Strong knowledge of NDE and PWHT requirements
  • Experience with 3D model review software Navisworks
  • Expert in Revu Bluebeam and MS Office applications
  • Strong understanding of brownfield tie‑ins and operating facility constraints
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and decision‑making skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of metallurgy and materials selection for corrosive and elevated temperature piping systems
  • Knowledge of Pipeline Engineering
  • Familiarity with modularized facilities
  • Field engineering or construction support experience in oil sands and gas plants
  • Prior client‑facing lead role on major oil sands EPC projects
