One of our clients, a major oil and gas company has tasked us with identifying a Piping Technologist (Piping Materials) to support ongoing capital projects in Calgary, Alberta. This is a 1-year contract position working Monday to Friday.
The Piping Technologist (Piping Materials) will be responsible for supporting piping material engineering activities across project phases, including design, procurement, fabrication, construction, and commissioning. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop and maintain piping material specifications, assist with material selection, and ensure compliance with project requirements, applicable codes, and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities- Develop, maintain, and update piping material specifications, line classes, material requisitions, and related project documentation.
- Support piping engineering teams with material selection activities for piping systems and associated components.
- Prepare and review piping material take-offs, bills of materials, and material reports.
- Coordinate with procurement teams, vendors, and fabricators to support material purchasing activities and technical clarifications.
- Review vendor documentation and ensure material compliance with project specifications and applicable standards.
- Assist with technical bid evaluations, material substitutions, and commercial package reviews.
- Support resolution of material-related technical queries, RFIs, and site issues during construction and commissioning.
- Work collaboratively with piping, mechanical, process, structural, electrical, and project teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and quality assurance activities.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company procedures, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate engineering records within project document management systems.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support standardization of piping material practices.
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in piping materials, piping design, or piping engineering support within EPC, EPCM, consulting, or owner/operator environments.
- Experience supporting oil and gas, petrochemical, energy, or industrial projects.
- Strong understanding of piping materials, specifications, line classes, valves, fittings, flanges, and specialty items.
- Familiarity with ASME, ASTM, and other applicable piping codes and standards.
- Experience preparing material requisitions, material take-offs, and reviewing vendor documentation.
- Knowledge of procurement, fabrication, and construction processes related to piping systems.
- Experience supporting multidisciplinary engineering project environments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Proficiency with piping-related engineering and design systems.
- Experience using engineering databases, document management systems, and material management tools.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Familiarity with integrated engineering project environments is considered an asset.
- Experience supporting EPC or EPCM project delivery.
- Exposure to brownfield and greenfield oil and gas projects.
- Experience assisting construction and commissioning teams with piping material-related issues.
- Knowledge of Alberta industry requirements and project execution practices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
- Collaborative approach to working within multidisciplinary teams.

- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
