Founded in Calgary, Alberta in 2001, CoolIT Systems is the leading Direct Liquid Cooling technology provider for data centers, supercomputers, and desktop computers. We design and manufacture solutions used by the largest tech companies globally. Recognized as one of “The Americas’ Fastest Growing Companies 2023” by Financial Times and honored with the Deloitte Fast 50 Clean Technology award in 2022, as well as the Deloitte Fast 500 distinction in both 2021 and 2022, CoolIT's rapid growth is capturing global attention.

As demand for generative AI, high performance computing and cloud solutions rapidly expands, there has never been a more exciting time to join our team.

Role What You’ll Do

The Mechanical Design Intern focuses on the innovative design and development of Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) for direct liquid cooling systems. The position involves supporting the entire design lifecycle from concept to testing, collaborating with various teams and partners, and continuously improving product designs for enhanced performance and manufacturability. This role requires mechanical engineering aptitude, proficiency in Solidworks CAD, and excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities
  • Support the complete design and development of Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs), considering factors like how heat moves, fluid flow, sensor placement, cable organization, and how easy they are to manufacture.
  • Work closely with core engineering team members, extended internal teams, and industry partners to support CDU product development and sustaining activities.
  • Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for coolant distribution units.
  • Build and test CDU prototypes, run experiments, collect data, and refine designs based on the results to achieve the desired thermal and mechanical performance.
  • Create detailed engineering documents, reports, and presentations to clearly explain design ideas, test results, and recommendations to internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Use advanced computer simulations to check and improve the performance of our CDU designs.
Who You Are Basic Qualifications
  • Must have completed at least 2 years of a Bachelor's degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Understanding of product design process, lifecycle, and principles of engineering change control.
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering principles, material science, and reliability analysis as they relate to structural component design, sensor selection, and electromechanical system integration.
  • Understanding of fluid dynamics principles, especially as they relate to heat transfer and fluid flow in cooling systems.
  • Understanding of designing components for mass production using various manufacturing methods (e.g., sheet metal, machining, casting, injection molding, and welded assemblies).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with rapid prototyping manufacturing techniques and testing of thermal/mechanical components; familiarity with lab equipment for data collection (Preferred).
Skills
  • Strong sense of urgency and responsiveness.
  • Excellent time management and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Developing CAD modelling and drafting skills for physical product design.
Abilities
  • Demonstrable proficiency with Solidworks CAD to prepare detailed mechanical designs & drawings.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in programming using Python.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and perform design calculations relevant to complex electromechanical and fluid dynamics projects.
  • Ability to perform component and system validation testing to support CDU product development.
  • Ability to apply organizational and communication skills to support component and design life cycle management and participate in the engineering change control process.
  • Capacity to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external partners.
