Substation Electrical Engineer

Description

Burns & McDonnell is an engineering consulting firm with offices in Canada and the US, they provide design and engineering services to various industries such as oil & gas, pulp & paper, power and food & beverage. They are currently seeking an experienced Substation Engineer to join their team in Calgary to support the substation group. The successful candidate will lead engineering and design activities for transmission and distribution substations up to 500 kV, overseeing projects from conceptual development through detailed design and construction support.

This role includes client engagement, technical leadership, mentorship of junior engineering staff, equipment specification reviews, procurement support, and participation in commissioning activities. The position offers the opportunity to work on major utility infrastructure programs involving substation expansions, modernization initiatives, asset replacement programs, and grid reliability improvements. The leadership responsibilities associated with this role are project-based and focused on directing and coordinating project team members to achieve project objectives.

This position does not include functional people management responsibilities such as performance management, career development, training, or oversight of a broader departmental team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

MUST HAVES
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.

- Registered Professional Engineer ( or immediately eligible for registration with EGBC or APEGA or willingness to get this certification - 10+ years of Electrical Engineering experience, including a minimum of 5 years performing electrical design work.

- Strong knowledge of transmission and distribution substations, power systems, and substation equipment up to 500 kV.

- Brownfield substation upgrade experience.

- Previous experience leading substation engineering projects, including coordination of engineering deliverables, technical reviews, and client interaction.

- Experience reviewing and approving engineering drawings, technical reports, equipment specifications, and vendor documentation.

- Strong communication, leadership, mentoring, and client-facing skills.

- Equipment replacement projects involving:
Power Transformers Circuit Breakers Switchgear Disconnect Switches Protection & Control Equipment Software Requirements Required / Preferred - ETAP
- AutoCAD NICE TO HAVES
- Experience supporting utility asset replacement or modernization programs.

- Proposal development, estimating, and project planning experience.

- Renewable energy and industrial power system experience.

- Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), commissioning, or construction support experience.

Strong communication and confidence to be client facing, must be able to articulate themselves clearly and be concise Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills. The pay range for this position is $100.00 - $115.00/hr.
