Employer Specialist, Engineering Career Centre

The Engineering Career Centre in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Employer Specialist for approximately 24 months.

Reports to the Senior Manager, Experiential and Work Integrated Learning This position involves frequent professional contact, both in person and virtually, with industry contacts at all levels of organizations, from front-line engineering supervisors and human resources professionals to senior executives. The position develops and maintains local, national and international employer relationships and requires approximately 300 unique industry contacts annually.

Standard work hours apply; however flexibility to attend industry events and meet with industry contacts outside regular working hours is required. Access to a personal vehicle is required as local and occasional provincial travel is required, with mileage provided. This role represents the Engineering Career Centre (ECC) with industry and works collaboratively with academic faculty, students and ECC staff to address and resolve employer and student concerns.

This position will be primarily on campus, may be suitable for one remote day when operationally feasible and requires the ability to manage multiple deadlines and a high volume of work.

• Developing and maintaining a network of industry contacts.
• Actively marketing to and recruiting new employers to be partners with the Engineering Career Centre.
• Identifying target industries and companies to proactively grow our industry partnerships for better jobs, better placement / postings rate, better meeting of student experience needs.
• Proactively monitor industry connections and WIL program performance (including student placement successes and challenges).
• Conducting internship site visits /check-ins with all employers and students who have an active placement, proactively supports employers and students to contribute to successful internship placements.
• Proactively addressing performance concerns from employers and investigates situations where students have raised concerns.
• Advising supervisors and HR representatives on creating quality engineering internships and summer opportunities.
• Providing advice, when requested, on engineering content of job postings and relevance / suitability for an Engineering student (Internship / summer position).
• Assisting the ECC Career Advisor in providing clear communication to students where a position may not qualify for engineering experience as per APEGA once determined by the Senior Manager
• Developing and securing sufficient internship and summer opportunities to support student demand and program placement targets, with consideration for anticipated growth in student enrolment and new programs.
• Maintaining knowledge of professional skills requirements and expectations of employers (technical & behavioral); industry market segments and available opportunities; and potential career paths for graduating engineers (undergrad and MEng).
• Participating in the development of plans to accommodate the needs of key partners, within the context of providing a successful and quality internship experience for students.
• Gathering feedback from employers, industry partners and students, and provides input to improve ECC processes.

• Developing and maintaining relationships with academic faculty to identify opportunities for industry engagement and employer partnerships.
• Actively participating with on-campus career services to stay abreast of new developments and training opportunities..
• Familiarity with the Schulich School of Engineering programs to develop and foster industry placements for undergraduate and MEng students.
• Required to develop working knowledge on the Elevate system (Orbis) to ensure accurate tracking and data analysis
• Assisting with all aspects of the Engineering Career Centre growth plan and actively contributing to the communication and marketing material for both internal and external stakeholders.

• Working with the ECC Career Advisors, and providing industry informed guidance, when required, to support student success.
