Role Summary

Tourism Calgary is seeking a dynamic and highly organized Manager of Major Events to support the successful delivery of high-impact events hosted in Calgary. Reporting to the Executive Director, Sport, Culture and Major Events, this role will work across a portfolio of major national and international events secured through Tourism Calgary’s event attraction efforts, helping ensure organizers receive exceptional support while maximizing the economic, community and reputational impact for Calgary.

The Manager of Major Events will oversee event-related deliverables and contractual obligations, while coordinating community activations and partner engagement that bring events to life across the city. Working closely with event organizers, venues, government, industry partners, and community stakeholders, this role plays an important part in ensuring Calgary delivers world‑class event experiences and reinforces its reputation as a premier host city.

Key Responsibilities Event Delivery & Stakeholder Coordination
  • Support the planning and delivery of major events secured by Tourism Calgary across major sport, entertainment and cultural sectors.
  • Act as a key liaison between event organizers and local stakeholders to ensure seamless coordination and execution across the community.
  • Lead and track event deliverables, timelines and operational commitments associated with hosting agreements and bid obligations.
  • Coordinate internal and external planning meetings and ensure follow‑through on action items and commitments.
  • Will often involve being part of local host committees that are responsible for event organization and delivery.
Contract & Obligation Management
  • Monitor and manage contractual obligations tied to hosted events, including reporting requirements, activation commitments, hospitality programs and stakeholder deliverables.
  • Maintain detailed project plans and status updates to ensure all commitments are completed on time and to a high standard.
  • Communicate with all key community partners and internal teams to ensure project status, needs and actions are understood.
  • Identify potential issues or risks and work collaboratively with partners to proactively resolve challenges.
Community Activation & Partner Engagement
  • Coordinate city‑wide activations and hosting initiatives that enhance the visitor and attendee experience while showcasing Calgary’s unique identity and hospitality.
  • Collaborate with partners across the tourism, hospitality, sport, arts, business and government sectors to align efforts to maximize event impact.
  • Support the development and implementation of welcome programs, volunteer engagement, fan experiences, media opportunities and destination storytelling initiatives.
  • Support efforts to maximize economic impact, community engagement and long‑term legacy outcomes associated with hosted events.
  • Assist with post‑event reporting, stakeholder recaps and impact analysis.
  • Help identify opportunities to leverage hosted events to elevate Calgary’s brand, visitor economy and future event attraction opportunities.
Required Experience
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in major event management, sport hosting, destination event delivery, venue operations, event rights holder relations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large‑scale events involving multiple stakeholder groups, complex operational requirements, and significant economic or community impact.
  • Experience working directly with event owners, rights holders, national sport organizations, international federations, promoters, or organizing committees.
  • Proven experience leading cross‑functional event planning processes and coordinating diverse stakeholder groups, including government agencies, venues, sponsors, tourism partners, public safety agencies, and community organizations.
  • Experience managing contractual obligations, hosting agreements, bid commitments, and post‑event reporting requirements.
  • Strong project management experience, including development and oversight of project plans, budgets, timelines, risk management strategies, and operational workbacks.
