Key ResponsibilitiesAs the Senior Tax Manager
, you will own and stabilize cross-border tax compliance while designing scalable, efficient processes that support the organization’s continued growth. Your responsibilities will include:
- Ownership of Canadian corporate tax compliance, including T2 filings and foreign affiliate considerations.
- Oversight and coordination of U.S. federal corporate tax filings (Forms 1120 / 1120-F), working closely with external advisors to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Management and coordination of U.S. state income and franchise tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Conduct nexus analysis (economic and physical presence) and support sales and use tax compliance, audits, and filings, leveraging tools such as Avalara / Ava Tax where applicable.
- Identify and flag cross-border employment and payroll considerations for Canadian employees working in the U.S., including T4 vs. W-2 coordination and permanent establishment risks.
- Apply foundational Canada–U.S. tax treaty knowledge to proactively surface issues and support informed decision-making.
- Participate in tax planning discussions related to entity structuring, intercompany transactions, cash movement, and transfer pricing awareness.
- Translate complex tax concepts into clear, practical guidance for finance and business leaders, while constructively challenging external advisors when needed.
- Design and improve end-to-end tax and compliance workflows with a strong focus on documentation, controls, and audit readiness.
- Partner with finance and systems teams to ensure data integrity within ERP environments (Net Suite or similar), and identify opportunities to automate recurring tax processes using modern tools and technologies.
To succeed in this role, candidates should demonstrate the following:
Education & Experience- CPA designation (Canada or U.S.); dual CPA is a strong asset.
- Approximately 7–12 years of progressive tax experience, ideally combining public accounting and industry or deep industry experience with advisor management.
- Experience with in mid-market, private equity–backed, or high-growth organizations is strongly preferred.
- Strong hands-on experience with Canadian and U.S. corporate tax compliance.
- Practical knowledge of U.S. state and local tax, sales and use tax, and nexus concepts.
- Comfort working with ERPs and tax-related systems; familiarity with automation, low-code/no-code tools, or basic scripting (SQL/Python) is a strong plus.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain tax implications in clear business terms.
- A proactive, systems-oriented mindset with a passion for improving processes and eliminating repetitive manual work.
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity, building structure where needed, and taking ownership in a growing organization.
