Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Sergeant, Police Trainer, the Training Constable delivers practical, operational training to recruits and members through instruction, coaching, and performance evaluation. This position supports recruit training, and in-service training, ensuring members develop competencies, judgement, and behaviors required for safe and effective policing. The role reinforces operational standards through hands‑on instruction in controlled and real‑world environments and plays a key part in ensuring recruits and members are competent, operationally ready, and deployable in alignment with ASPS standards and legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coach and mentor recruits, reinforcing operational standards and expectations.
  • Assess performance through observation, structured evaluation, and documentation (e.g., DORs).
  • Support recruitment and in‑service training (classroom, practical, and scenario‑based).
  • Participate in mandatory training delivery (e.g., use‑of‑force, firearms) as qualified.
  • Apply and reinforce ASPS standards, policies, and professional conduct.
  • Maintain accurate, defensible training records and contribute to continuous program improvement.
Competencies

Systems Thinking: Sees the whole system of recruit development—linking training activities to ASPS standards, operational realities, stakeholder impacts, and long‑term readiness.

Creative Problem Solving: Diagnoses learning/performance issues at the root cause and adapts coaching/training approaches (within policy) to achieve safe, effective skill development.

Agility: Stays effective under changing operational demands, shifting priorities, and high‑stress training environments; adjusts plans quickly while maintaining safety and standards.

Drive for Results: Sets clear training outcomes, follows through on coaching and evaluations, and holds self/recruits accountable to achieve competency, readiness, and defensible documentation.

Build Collaborative Environments: Creates a constructive learning environment—sharing information, coordinating with training/operations, and addressing conflict early to keep training productive and professional.

Develop Self and Others: Commits to continuous learning and actively develops others through timely feedback, coaching, and structured evaluations that improve performance and integrity of the program.
