As a Forest Officer you will be an integral member of the Wildfire Management Program, reporting to the Wildfire Technologist. Your day‑to‑day duties will include:
- Participation in wildfire prevention, operations, and forest management activities, utilizing knowledge of fire behaviour, fuel types, and firefighting techniques.
- Assisting in wildfire detection, enforcement, education, engineering, pre‑suppression, and suppression operations.
- Supervising and coordinating seasonal wildland firefighting crews to ensure safe and efficient suppression activities.
- Overseeing Initial Attack Crews, monitoring Lookout Staff adherence to program standards, and enforcing fire permits in accordance with legislation.
- Contributing to Fire Smart initiatives, Forest Operations Monitoring (FOMP), and Forest Health programs, including inspections under Forestry Operations and non‑compliance investigations.
Minimum Requirements:
- Two‑year diploma in Forestry or a related Natural Resource Management field.
- At least three (3) years of directly related forestry or wildfire experience.
- Education and experience can be considered on a one‑year equivalent basis (e.g., one year of education equals one year of experience and vice versa).
Desired Assets:
- Supervisory or leadership experience.
- Eligibility for registration with the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals.
The role is a permanent, full‑time position with standard weekly hours of 36.25. Overtime, evening, and weekend work may be required due to the emergency nature of wildfires. Travel within the area and across the province will also be necessary to coordinate with Ministry staff, other government departments, clients, and external stakeholders.
