The Investigation Specialist position is part of the unit responsible for conducting complex investigations, compliance reviews, and related case management activities. The unit supports fair, consistent, and evidence-based decision-making by gathering and analyzing information, preparing findings and recommendations, and working collaboratively with internal and external partners to support program integrity and accountability.

Reporting to the Manager of the Special Investigations Unit, as a member of a multi-disciplinary Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Team, the Investigation Specialist supports the teams in response to logistical coordination to complex, large scale incident investigations.

This position also works with a team of specialized prosecutors to design, develop and oversee creative sentence and enhanced regulatory supervision (ERS) Court Orders for corporate entities convicted of OHS offenses. The Investigation Specialist will also be the primary point of contact for next of kin (NOK) and injured workers. As the liaison, the Investigation Specialist will provide timely communications regarding the status of the investigation and court proceedings.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Supports Investigation Team with reportable incidents:

- Communicates updates to leadership
- Assists teams with large-scale investigation coordination – Liaise with next of kin/injured workers
- Facilitates close out meetings
- Assists with public reporting.

Court proceedings and communications:

- Coordinates victims, witnesses, and experts
- Informs victims/NOK about proceedings
- Provides support with legal documents
- Communicates court rulings.

OHS Creative Sentencing, Enhanced Regulatory Supervision:

- Proposes creative sentence projects
- Ensures compliance with Court orders
- Identifies education or resource gaps
- Assesses worksite parties for enhanced regulatory supervision
- Prepares files when there is a breach of a Court Order, prepare detailed reports.

Leadership/Coaching/Relationships:

- Promotes staff development
- Participates in meetings and networks
- Collaborates to develop processes
- Liaises with stakeholders

Technical Programs:

- Assists with training
- Reviews investigation materials
- Contributes to guidance documents.

As the Investigation Specialist, you must have the ability to establish, foster and maintain professional working relationships as this role works closely with multiple program areas and stakeholders. It is critical that you demonstrate strong decision-making abilities based on sound judgement and fairness, and that you can adapt both your verbal and written communication to fit the needs of your audience.
