Position: Sessional Instructor (Simulated Clients), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - Fall 2026 and Winter 2027

Description

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for Simulated Clients to support communication and professional skills education within the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program.

Simulated Clients portray pet owners and other stakeholders in structured educational scenarios that help veterinary students develop communication, professionalism, empathy, and client interaction skills in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Scheduled Sessions

Applicants are encouraged to apply to as many sessions as are available to them from the below schedule. Finalized schedules and expectations for each Simulated Client will be communicated in advance and may vary per individual throughout the academic year based on curricular needs. Preference will be given to candidates who can commit to multiple sessions across each semester, especially sessions that occur on the same day.

Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to)
  • Participate in veterinary communication and professional skills laboratory activities
  • Participate in required onboarding and training activities associated with the role, including:
    • One group training session on pedagogy and principles of feedback (in person)
    • Training session (typically 1-2 hours) for each new case (in person or online) assigned
  • Review scenario materials and preparation documents in advance of scheduled sessions
  • Accurately and consistently portray assigned client scenarios
  • Client scenarios may include:
    • routine appointments
    • emotionally sensitive conversations
    • conflict-resolution situations
    • informed consent discussions
    • end-of-life care conversations
  • Engage with students during simulated clinical encounters
  • Provide learner feedback from the client perspective when requested
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student performance and educational materials
  • Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, reliability, and respectful conduct in all program activities
Qualifications
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to consistently portray assigned scenarios, including emotional affect
  • Reliability, professionalism, and adaptability
  • Ability to use improvisational skills, as cases require
  • Ability to memorize large amounts of complex information
  • Ability to provide consistent, objective and professional feedback
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information
  • Experience in acting, improvisation, facilitation, education, healthcare simulation, or communication training is considered a strong asset
  • Preference will be given to candidates who can commit to multiple sessions across each semester, especially sessions that occur on the same day
