The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Medical Lab Assistant
. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

This position supports the AI.Dx Lab within the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health at the University of Calgary and could be supporting multiple studies. Many participants recruited in the various studies have autoimmune diseases and may be challenging to draw blood from due to their condition. Therefore, experience and being comfortable with difficult draws is crucial.

The position is primarily involved with phlebotomy and specimen collection at locations, such as the Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre (RRDTC) and Foothills Medical Centre (FMC).

• Performs venipuncture and processing of blood samples
• Obtains other specimens, such as dried blood spots, saliva and urine from research participants
• Labels all samples collected in accordance with standard laboratory procedures
• Aware of laboratory safety procedures and act appropriately and quickly as required (i.e., dealing with needle stick injuries or spills within lab area)
• Uses personal protective equipment appropriately, and identifies and reports unsafe conditions
• Stores, transports and disposes of biological and other hazardous materials according to guidelines and records information as required
• Operates and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment
• Performs quality control and quality assurance activities of laboratory equipment
• Maintains cleanliness of clinic space, laboratory area and sterilization of equipment
• May be asked to assist with research assistant duties, such as consenting patients, patient questionnaires, and ethics
• Follows study and laboratory protocols and procedures to ensure the privacy and safety of participants, co-workers, and self

• Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory Assistant program (required)
• Has Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification or equivalent (required)
• At least 5 years of experience working as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (preferred)
• Proficient in computer skills (Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power-Point, and Teams)
• Excellent time management, organizational, and effective communication skills
• Research experience would be considered an asset
• TDG and GCP training would be considered an asset
• Familiarity with Connect Care, Netcare and REDCap would be considered an asset
