Calgary Adult Bariatric Surgery Program

The program supports clients through preoperative and postoperative clinical dietetics . The Dietitian I provides Nutrition Basics, Surgery Preparation, and Bariatric Surgery Cooking classes as part of that pathway.

The Calgary program delivers client services in person and virtually. The program also connects nutrition counselling with behavioural-change strategies and health-promotion education for people living with obesity and related chronic conditions.

Clinical Work Across The Care Plan

The role covers the full nutrition-care cycle, from assessment through evaluation. The dietitian develops care plans, implements them with clients, and evaluates their progress while managing competing clinical priorities.

  • Nutrition assessment and individualized care-plan development
  • Chronic disease management and nutrition counselling
  • Preoperative and postoperative bariatric client care
  • Nutrition education for staff, students, healthcare professionals, and external stakeholders
  • Translation of nutrition research into practice
  • Liaison work between Nutrition Services and Alberta Health Services programs and teams

The position also supports public-health nutrition services and education. Motivational interviewing, patient-centred care, virtual class facilitation, and experience with disordered-eating concerns are preferred qualifications.

The Commission on Dietetic Registration identifies the Registered Dietitian credential as food and nutrition expertise used in health care, community and public health, education, research, government, business, and private practice. Alberta Health Services requires an accredited foods and nutrition degree pathway and active or eligible provincial registration for this role.

The College of Dietitians of Alberta registration requirement applies alongside the academic and practical training requirements. A satisfactory criminal record check or Vulnerable Sector Search is required before the first day of work, and the position requires ongoing disclosure of charges or convictions during employment.

Weekday Clinical Schedule

Each two-week cycle contains 10 day shifts of 7.75 hours, with Saturdays and Sundays off. The permanent 1.00 FTE arrangement gives the role a defined weekday pattern within the Calgary program.

Clinical dietetics combines assessment, counselling, education, and coordination with other health professionals. The Code of Ethics guidance for credentialed nutrition and dietetics practitioners includes professional conduct and confidentiality expectations, including redaction of patient identifying information in complaint materials.

Continuing Competence For Dietitians

CDR's Universal Professional Development Portfolio guide sets a five-year recertification cycle for Registered Dietitians and requires 75 continuing professional education units, including at least one ethics or health equity unit.
