As a Senior Underwriter, Special Lines you will support the organizations goals in achieving profitability, client engagement and co‑op experience by providing professional underwriting expertise and support while managing complex risks for our clients and the organization. You will respond directly to inquiries from stakeholders and clients and exercise sound underwriting judgment, and creativity in response to questions on policy interpretation, risk selection, rating, and exceptions.

You will coach and mentor others on the team as well as stakeholders.

How you will create impact:
  • Coaching, training and developing team members and providing timely feedback to achieve department objectives.
  • Collaborating with advisors & front‑line staff to identify attractive risk segments and developing go‑to‑market strategies.
  • Working with cross‑functional team daily to resolve outcome‑oriented business problems while leveraging information, technical expertise, and inputs from access to the underwriting function
  • Assisting in the development of team members through coaching, mentoring, and guidance in risk assessment.
  • Analyzing, evaluating, and negotiating terms and conditions for renewals, new business, and policy changes within their assigned authority.
  • Amending policy coverages, premiums, or canceling policy based on applying underwriting decision‑making following underwriting rules or guidelines or underwriting discretion.
  • Calculating and negotiating Treaty/Facultative reinsurance as required.
To join our team:
  • You have 5 years of experience in underwriting commercial or farm risks.
  • You have completed a post‑secondary degree in a related field.
  • You are actively pursuing CIP designation.
  • You have advanced knowledge of underwriting practices, insurance products, risk assessments, and competitor landscape.
  • You have strong critical and logical thinking skills.
  • You have the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • This position primarily works with majority non‑francophone groups, and teams located outside of Québec, and requires proficiency in English. The essential non‑French duties are not assignable to adjacent or other team members.

Salary information

$60,574.00 to $ CAD

Salary placement

"The salary amount for the successful candidate is determined by Co‑operators in its discretion and will vary depending on several criteria including but not limited to: local market conditions, geography and relevant job‑related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education."
