The Executive Underwriter Energy will lead the assessment and underwriting of complex, high-value risks across established and emerging energy sectors. The role is responsible for delivering profitable portfolio growth through disciplined risk selection, technical underwriting excellence and effective management of pricing, terms, capacity and aggregation.

As a senior market-facing underwriter, the role will build trusted relationships with brokers, clients and industry partners, identify new business opportunities and develop tailored solutions that respond to evolving technologies and risk profiles.

The successful candidate will balance commercial opportunity with long‑term portfolio sustainability while helping strengthen the organization’s position in the Energy Transition and Natural Resources market.

Whatyou’ll be doing Underwriting and portfolio management
  • Underwrite complex and high-value risks within delegated authority.
  • Evaluate exposures, loss scenarios, risk controls and coverage requirements.
  • Establish appropriate pricing, terms, conditions and capacity.
  • Manage renewals, new business and portfolio performance against agreed targets.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting documentation and comply with governance requirements.
  • Identify emerging risks and recommend portfolio actions.
Energy Transition and Natural Resources expertise
  • Underwrite risks across established and emerging energy sectors, which may include renewable energy, energy storage, hydrogen, carbon capture, mining and related infrastructure.
  • Assess new technologies, changing risk profiles and evolving operating models.
  • Monitor regulatory, environmental and market developments affecting the portfolio.
  • Collaborate with internal specialists to develop appropriate underwriting solutions.
Technical leadership
  • Serve as a technical referral point for complex underwriting matters.
  • Coach and mentor underwriters, supporting the development of technical capability.
  • Share market intelligence, lessons learned and underwriting best practices.
  • Contribute to underwriting guidelines, risk appetite and product development.
  • Support portfolio reviews and strategic planning.
Business development
  • Build and maintain outstanding relationships with brokers, clients and industry partners.
  • Develop a robust pipeline of profitable new business.
  • Lead complex submissions, negotiations and account presentations.
  • Work with distribution partners to identify opportunities in high-growth sectors.
  • Represent the organization at relevant industry and market events.
Collaboration
  • Partner with Claims, Risk Engineering, Actuarial, Legal, Compliance, Operations and Reinsurance.
  • Incorporate claims trends, engineering insights and exposure analysis into underwriting decisions.
  • Support consistent underwriting practices across regional and global teams.
  • Contribute to broader Energy Transition and Natural Resources initiatives.

We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:

Required Qualifications and Capabilities
  • Significant experience underwriting complex commercial or specialty risks.
  • Demonstrated experience in Energy, Natural Resources, Renewables or related sectors.
  • Proven record of developing profitable business and managing major accounts.
  • Experience operating within delegated underwriting authorities.
  • Relevant degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Professional insurance designation such as CIP, FCIP, ACII or CPCU is an asset.
  • Ability to evaluate emerging technologies and complex risk information.
  • Robust commercial judgement and portfolio-management capability.
  • Established broker and client relationship skills.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
