The Deputy Minister’s Office (DMO) provides strategic leadership and coordination for ministry priorities. This position plays a critical role in ensuring timely delivery of priorities and initiatives aligned with government direction.
Role ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Executive Director of Executive Operations, the Director, Strategic Priorities and Issues Management provides leadership to the DMO and oversees strategic coordination of ministry priorities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Strategic Coordination: Lead development and implementation of ministry mandate, initiatives, and projects; ensure alignment with government priorities.
- Issues Management: Develop and implement strategies and processes to manage urgent or politically sensitive matters; facilitate communication between the DMO, Minister’s Office, and ADM offices.
- Executive Support: Provide strategic advice and analysis; review briefing materials and ensure timely delivery for meetings and decisions.
- Policy & Legislative Oversight: Coordinate review of major policies, legislation, regulations, and Cabinet documents; ensure integration with ministry priorities.
- Leadership & Operations: Assist with managing DMO operations, including staffing, performance management, and building collaborative relationships across divisions.

Minimum University graduation in a related field (Political Science, Public Administration, Social Sciences, Arts, Business Administration, Economics, or other related field), supplemented by seven (7) or more years of experience in a public service environment, including experience with:
- Government policy development cycle and legislative processes.
- Strategic analysis and issues management.
- Leadership in complex, politically sensitive environments.
- Knowledge of Alberta’s political system, government mandates, and decision-making processes.
- Direct supervision of employees.
The following will be considered assets:
- Prior experience in a Deputy Minister’s Office and/or Executive Council office (e.g., Policy Coordination Office, Cabinet Coordination Office).
- A graduate degree in a related field.
