Job Description

We are currently seeking a Laboratory Technician for a permanent full‑time position to join our team of skilled professionals at our Calgary Plant. This state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing plant produces premium roofing shingles in a high‑speed, continuous, asphalt shingle manufacturing process environment.

Reporting to the Quality Control Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of a quality plan to drive continuous improvement in plant performance, and for ensuring that finished products comply with company, industry and government standards.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform tests in the Laboratory on key parameters associated with the quality assurance of finished products.
  • Monitor the quality of finished products in real time, resolve issues with the production team and escalates quality issues on a timely basis.
  • Monitor quality impact of new production processes, methods, or equipment.
  • Implement ongoing quality improvement processes and procedures working with interdepartmental teams and involving production employees.
  • Support the development and implementation of a quality plan to drive continuous improvement in plant performance.
  • Measure quality assurance metrics to identify opportunities for improvement, progress on goals and accountability for performance.
  • Identify, troubleshoot and drive resolution of production quality deficiencies and problems.
  • Escalate quality assurance issues to the Quality team and Plant management on a timely basis.
  • Ensure that lab equipment is calibrated and in good condition and communicate material and spare requirements in advance.
  • Collate and analyze performance data and chart against defined parameters.
  • Work with shipping to ensure that outgoing products are sorted, segregated, isolated, and downgraded as per disposition from the quality team.
  • Be able to lift 25 lbs. The person may be required to move a bundle of shingles weighing 60 lbs on a trolley; this task is usually done with assistance.
Qualifications
  • Diploma or Degree in a science‑related field.
  • 1–3 years of experience in an industrial process manufacturing environment in a quality assurance role with hands‑on experience with quality management systems preferred.
  • Proficient with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal, and presentation) and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment and calibrating/troubleshooting instruments will be an asset.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast‑paced environment where test results may be required quickly.
  • Ability to interact with frontline teams.
  • Self‑initiative:
    Ability to work diligently without supervision.
  • Team player:
    Able to help QA/QC supervisor with tasks assigned.
