The Journeyman Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems and equipment within the plant to ensure protected, efficient, and reliable operations. This role supports production by minimizing downtime through timely diagnostics and repairs, while adhering to all applicable electrical codes, safety standards, and company policies. Working in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment, the Journeyman Electrician performs preventative and corrective maintenance on a wide range of equipment, including motors, control panels, conveyors, PLC systems, and automated machinery.
The position requires strong technical knowledge, problem‑solving skills, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings. The Journeyman Electrician collaborates closely with maintenance and operations teams to optimize equipment performance, implement improvements, and support continuous improvement initiatives. This role may also assist in new equipment installations, upgrades, and project work.
- Ensure co‑workers’ health and safety by following housekeeping procedures, keeping the work area clear of obstructions, and reporting any potential hazards to the Supervisor.
- Wear protective equipment and clothing as determined by company procedures and as posted.
- Maintain equipment as required by procedure, internal practices, and standards.
- Participate in preventive maintenance, machine modification, and installation of equipment.
- Ensure that production and plant equipment is properly locked out and tagged out.
- Maintain all equipment on a regular basis to ensure safe and efficient operating conditions.
- Report usage of all spare parts so that inventory can be properly maintained.
- Lubricate equipment at the start of and throughout the shift as required by preventive maintenance schedules.
- Ensure that equipment is properly set up and on time for all production runs.
- Make ongoing periodic checks on equipment during operation to ensure satisfactory operation with good output quality and to spot potential problems.
- Adjust equipment and replace worn parts as required, ensuring minimum downtime and working closely with supervision and production staff to schedule maintenance.
- Implement changes that deliver desired results and continue to work on improvements if optimal production efficiency is not achieved; report problems to the supervisor.
- Make shop repairs to equipment when required; unscheduled shut‑down of more than ½ hour must be reported to the supervisor at time of occurrence or to production supervision during off‑shifts.
- Perform necessary repairs using hand tools or shop equipment; basic skills are required in machining and welding.
- Conduct troubleshooting of electrical equipment and circuits, including locating and changing fuses, electric motors, and reading electrical drawings.
- Log all relevant incidents into the maintenance log by the end of each shift to ensure proper communication of facts.
- Keep the maintenance shop and other work areas neat and orderly and practice all safety rules.
- Undertake special tasks as requested by the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Positive English language skills – written and oral.
- Ability to communicate with all departments and all levels of the organization.
