Overview
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in acute care with the Palliative Care Consult Service – Foothills Medical Centre and Arthur Child Cancer Centre will provide an advanced level of nursing practice that maximizes the application of in‑depth nursing theory, knowledge and skills in meeting the complex health care needs of individuals, families and communities. The CNS functions as a palliative consultant, nursing practice leader, expert practitioner, educator and researcher within Palliative and End‑of‑Life Care.
ResponsibilitiesAs a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will provide advanced, expert nursing consultation for palliative and end‑of‑life care for in‑patients. You will balance various roles depending upon the needs of the patient population and the healthcare team, collaborating on the provision of holistic and comprehensive care. Your impact will include clinical practice and consultation, education, program planning, change leadership, community‑of‑practice facilitation, research, and involvement with policy development related to advanced nursing care and health systems in palliative care.
Required Qualifications- Master's degree in Nursing
- Active or eligible registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS‑HCP)
Required Qualifications
- 5‑7 years minimum full‑time equivalency of nursing acute care clinical experience caring for patients experiencing life‑limiting illness
- Ability to work well independently and as part of an interprofessional team
- Demonstrated skills as an educator, innovator, and change agent
- Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication
- Demonstrated leadership, adherence to DEI and trauma‑informed care practices, and organisational skills
- High level computer literacy skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities, multiple interruptions, and difficult conversations
- Ability to manage emotionally stressful situations involving patients, family members and attending teams
- Demonstrated experience as an advanced practice palliative nurse in a consultant role
- CNA – Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Nursing certified (CHPCN)
- Completion of the ACP/GCD Course
- Completion of the Serious Illness Conversation Workshop
- Completion of the How to Care, What to Say Workshop
- Completion of Pallium LEAP training
