Details
Based out of Burnaby (or other areas in the Lower Mainland), Calgary or Edmonton, you’ll have the opportunity to work as part of multi-disciplinary project teams associated with our Western Canada Offices to contribute to the environmental planning, permitting, and construction support efforts of government and privately-owned infrastructure projects. As a Junior Wildlife Field Biologist, you’ll have the opportunity to be mentored and support field work for wildlife surveys, but also field work for other biophysical disciplines as needed.
This position will start in the spring with an anticipated 80% of travel for fieldwork and 20% office work. A successful offer will be a 6- to 9-month contract or full-time depending on workload and/or skillset. Contracts have the potential for extension or conversion to fulltime. - Provide technical direction and support for the wildlife biology components of our challenging natural resource projects.
- Contribute to environmental planning, permitting, and construction support efforts for government and privately-owned infrastructure projects.
- Support field work for wildlife surveys and, as needed, field work for other biophysical disciplines.
- Travel for fieldwork (approximately 80%) and perform office work (approximately 20%).
- Assist with mentoring and collaboration within multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Minimum degree or diploma in biology or other environmental discipline (or near completion), primarily related to wildlife, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Experience conducting biological or environmental work in an outdoor setting.
- Willingness and comfort working in the field in remote locations for up to 2 or 3 weeks at a time and overnight at hotels and project work camps.
- Relevant field experience, courses, and interest related to wildlife, preferably with emphasis on bird identification and surveys, amphibian identification and surveys, and wildlife tracks and sign in western Canada.
- Positive attitude, self-motivated to learn and develop as a valuable team member.
- Strong safety mindset during work.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, team-oriented, and suited to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- A driver’s license and ability to provide a clean, 3-year driving abstract.
- Interest and knowledge of other biophysical study areas, baseline studies, and monitoring programs such as wetlands delineation and classification, soils, rare plants, weeds, water quality monitoring, and/or fisheries.
- Experience viewing and/or collecting field data using a mobile app (e.g., Esri Field Maps or Survey
123). - Experience viewing and/or reviewing digitally collected field data in a web-browser or desktop-based digital solution.
- Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation and regulatory requirements as they relate to wildlife, primarily in western Canada.
- Hold or be working toward a Professional Designation under the BC College of Applied Biology and/or the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.
