POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting a Quality Control Inspector (CWB Level II Welding Inspector) to join our Quality team at our Shepard Shop (9423 Shepard Road SE, Calgary, AB).

Reporting to the QC Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing quality control inspections on pressure vessels, pressure piping, structural steel, skid assemblies, and modular process equipment throughout fabrication. The role will also provide quality inspection support to Startec's Industrial Refrigeration Service division, including field inspections, repairs, alterations, maintenance activities, and commissioning support as required. This position requires occasional travel to customer sites and the flexibility to work overtime or weekends to support project and customer requirements.

Working closely with Production, Engineering, Project Management, Service Operations, Authorized Inspectors (ABSA), third-party inspectors, and clients, the Quality Control Inspector plays a key role in ensuring all fabrication, repair, and installation activities comply with applicable codes, client specifications, and Startec's Quality Management System.

BEHAVIOURAL ASSESSMENT:

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):

QUALITY CONTROL INSPECTIONS (Weighting 70%)Inspection Activities
  • Perform in-process and final inspections of pressure vessels, pressure piping, structural steel, skid assemblies, and modular process equipment.
  • Perform visual welding inspections in accordance with CSA W178.2, ASME Section V, ASME Section IX, and applicable fabrication codes.
  • Verify joint preparation, fit-up, alignment, welding parameters, preheat, interpass temperatures, and completed welds.
  • Verify fabrication complies with engineering drawings, client specifications, Quality Control Procedures, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and applicable codes and standards.
  • Inspect incoming materials and verify compliance with purchase specifications, material test reports (MTRs), and traceability requirements.
  • Verify material identification and heat number traceability throughout fabrication.
  • Review fabrication packages prior to production.
  • Perform dimensional inspections throughout fabrication.
  • Conduct line checks of completed piping systems, valves, instruments, and process equipment.
  • Witness pressure testing, leak testing, and mechanical completion activities.
  • Coordinate and witness required NDE activities including RT, UT, MT, PT, PMI, hardness testing, ferrite testing, and holiday testing where applicable.
  • Support Authorized Inspector (ABSA), National Board, client, and third-party inspections.
  • Conduct final package inspections prior to shipment.
  • Develop and manage punch lists through mechanical completion.

Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain detailed records of inspection results, including measurements, observations, and any non-conformities.
  • Prepare manufacturer’s data record (MDR) for ASME stamped vessels and AB-83 for piping systems.
  • Consolidate punch lists for plant systems exception lists and provides tracking to ensure that all punch list items are captured and signed off for mechanical completion.
  • Prepare comprehensive inspection reports summarizing finds and recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Communicate inspection results effectively to supervisors, production teams, and other relevant departments.
  • Collaborate with various team members to implement corrective and preventative measures based on inspection findings.
  • Complete a full review of final hand-over documentation such as QA record book-site records, mechanical catalog book, and manual/data book, to ensure they comply with client requirements and contract.
