The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant . This Part‑time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Research Laboratory Technician performs skilled laboratory procedures in support of neuroscience research, including animal handling, neuronal cell culture, or brain tissue processing. The role provides technical support to the research team through hands‑on experimentation and maintaining an organized laboratory environment.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.
Responsibilities
Animal handling, husbandry, and tissue collection per institutional protocols
Establishing and maintaining neuronal cell cultures
Brain sectioning (cryostat/vibratome), perfusion‑fixation, and immunostaining (IHC/IF)
Fluorescence and confocal microscopy, including image acquisition and quantitative analysis
Standard molecular techniques: DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, qPCR, and western blot Preparing culture media, buffers, fixatives, and lab stock solutions
Maintaining experimental records, inventory, and reagent stocks
Keeping sterile work areas clean and compliant with biosafety standards
Contributing to experimental design under PI supervision
Qualifications
BSc in Neuroscience, Cell Biology, or related field required
MSc preferred
2+ years hands‑on experience in neuronal culture, animal handling, and brain tissue processing
Proficiency in brain sectioning and IHC/IF staining workflows required
Experience with organoid culture is a strong asset
Proficiency with fluorescence/confocal microscopy and image analysis
Familiarity with standard molecular biology techniques
Animal handling certification, or willingness to obtain
Strong organizational, written, and communication skills
Intermediate – Advanced Microsoft Office proficiency
WHMIS certification required
