Overview
The Department of Medical Genetics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This full‑time fixed‑term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. This position reports to the Program Manager.
The role is to support the Principal Investigator in various research activities primarily in immunogenetics and with a clinical / translational medicine focus. The research coordinator position encompasses the technical, analytical, and clerical functions of research studies, clinical trials, and other projects in the Department of Medical Genetics, including project implementation. This position also encompasses enrolment, knowledge translation, and direct communication with patients.
Errors will have potential for significant impact and therefore a responsibility to ensure that work is completed in an efficient and effective manner is essential. This position will work both independently and in a team environment. There may be an increased variety of duties and tasks within the position dependent on the needs of the members. This position will require knowledge of confidential practices and procedures.
Due to the nature of the work, the position requires the candidate to have a strong background in genetics.
- Initiate and follow up on patient contact from referrals in the research program
- Create and modify ethics applications for the various research projects
- Work with CSM Legal on regulatory applications and agreements
- Create consent forms for new research studies, review consent forms, respond to questions and obtain consent for families who wish to enroll in studies
- Complete and send out requisitions to obtain relevant samples where required
- Liaise with research facilities and assist with coordination of sample collection and transfer
- Responsible for the research databases of patient and family enrolment including details of date of enrolment in various studies, demographics, study IDs, samples obtained
- Coordinate and administer research projects per established study protocols and study procedure manuals
- Recruit and explain research to new participants
- Responsible for ensuring complete and accurate data collection and entry of data into electronic databases in a timely fashion
- Perform regular quality control checks on data entries
- Collaborate with the investigative team, physicians, nurses, genetic counsellors, and clinic staff for ensuring timely implementation and completion of research activities
- Work closely with other research team members to design and implement other studies being conducted
- Responsible for confidential research data management
- Conduct analyses of data collected through study Platform and associated projects
- Work closely with the Primary Investigator in areas of analytics and reporting, in the development of documents for the purpose of reporting to the investigative team and the stakeholders, and manuscript preparation for publication
- Proactively anticipates problems and develops preventative solutions; helps to establish quality performance standards
- Bachelor's degree in a health or science related field
- Experience in medical genetics with a master's degree or higher considered an asset
- Minimum three years research experience with experience in sample and data collection, including data organization and sample tracking
- Detail oriented and comfortable with complex workflows
- Experience with clinical research and/or direct patient contact
- Experience administering and/or interviewing study participants
- Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of research policies and procedures
- Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (e.g., Tri Council)
- Demonstrated ability in professional writing, preparing reports, preparing grants, and conducting literature reviews
- Previous experience in Alberta Children's Hospital genetics department (including volunteer positions) will be considered an asset
