Senior Research Technician – Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy, Cumming School of Medicine

This full‑time fixed‑term position (≈1 year, with possible extension) reports to the Principal Investigator and provides technical and operational support for animal research, transgenic colony management, cell culture, molecular biology, regulatory compliance, and laboratory operations. The incumbent mentors laboratory personnel and maintains compliance with CCAC guidelines and institutional policies.

• Perform advanced rodent surgical procedures (stereotaxic surgery, intracranial injections, craniotomy, in‑utero and postnatal electroporation) using aseptic technique and maintain perioperative records.
• Administer anesthesia, monitor animals during surgery, and conduct post‑operative care and perfusion for tissue collection.
• Manage transgenic and genetically modified mouse colonies: breeding, weaning, ear punching, tail biopsy, genotyping, and record maintenance.
• Maintain primary mouse cell cultures and human cell lines, including ES/iPSC lines and organoid systems.
• Perform molecular assays (DNA/RNA extraction, ddPCR/qPCR, immunostaining, western blotting) and standard molecular biology techniques.
• Prepare, review, amend and submit Animal Use Protocols (AUPs) in accordance with CCAC guidelines.
• Support inspections, compliance audits, and laboratory safety reviews; maintain chemical inventories and SOPs.
• Manage day‑to‑day laboratory operations: purchasing, inventory, equipment maintenance, and processing procurement and financial transactions with People Soft.
• Provide hands‑on training and mentorship to students and lab personnel in surgical techniques, animal handling, and laboratory SOPs.

• Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences or related discipline (required).
• Master of Science in a relevant field or Diploma in Veterinary Technology/Animal Health Technology with current RVT designation (preferred).
• Minimum 5 years of experience supporting laboratory animal research with mouse models, including AUP development and regulatory compliance.
• Expertise in rodent anesthesia and surgery; experience with transgenic colony management.
• Experience with mammalian cell culture and standard molecular biology techniques (ddPCR/qPCR, immunostaining, Western blotting, DNA/RNA extraction).
• Experience with laboratory purchasing, inventory management, and financial administration (preferably using People Soft).
• Strong knowledge of CCAC guidelines and laboratory animal welfare principles.
• Proficiency in mouse colony management and cell/molecular biology techniques; cloning experience is an asset.
• Experience with bioinformatics (R, Python) is an asset.

This position is part of the AUPE bargaining unit and falls under the Technical Job Family, Phase 2.
