Research Coordinator, Palliative Medicine
The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This part‑time fixed‑term position is for approximately 12 months, 21 hours a week, and the person will work closely with researchers in palliative care, nephrology, and family medicine to improve the health of people living with serious life‑limiting diseases. The Research Coordinator reports to the Research Manager for the Division of Palliative Medicine.
AdministrativeActivities
- Sets up and manages project meetings, including taking minutes, preparing documentation and creating project presentations
- Works with staff and university departments to assist researchers in setting up contracts and agreements for external vendors, contractors and other parties in compliance with university policies
- Supports financial operations such as submitting expense claims, purchasing supplies and processing invoices
- Works with study investigators to develop protocols and associated documents (procedure manuals, recruitment materials, consent forms, enrollment logs, case report forms, interview guides, surveys)
- Ensures required contracts, confidentiality agreements and approvals are in place
- Supports clinical staff and stakeholders with resources and training associated with the research protocol
- Submits ethics applications, amendments, renewals and adverse events to research ethics boards
- Coordinates recruitment of study participants with research and clinical personnel
- Recruits and consents participants according to GCP and ICH guidelines
- Monitors enrollment goals and modifies recruitment strategies as needed
- Participates in data collection (focus groups, interviews, questionnaires, chart reviews, database entry)
- Conducts qualitative data analysis using NVivo and quantitative analysis using descriptive or statistical methods, maintaining databases
- Maintains accurate, timely and complete documentation and records
- Liaises with key stakeholder groups to promote awareness of projects
- Fosters collaborative relationships with healthcare providers, palliative care teams, the Nephrology Research Group, university staff and clinical teams
- Assists with writing abstracts, reports, manuscripts and presentations
- Generates presentations for internal and external stakeholders, including conferences and meetings
- Produces various reports required by funders
- Supports investigators with grant applications, including literature reviews, budget drafting and institutional approvals
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a health‑related field (e.g., epidemiology, health services research)
- 3‑5 years of related research experience
- Experience with qualitative research methods, quantitative research methods and knowledge synthesis
- Experience with nominal group technique and Delphi methods is an asset
- Experience with electronic data capture systems such as REDCap is an asset
- Experience with secondary data sources for research such as electronic medical records and administrative data is an asset
- Analytic skills and knowledge of statistical software such as Stata, NVivo is an asset
- Working knowledge of Alberta health systems, health informatics, the Health Information Act, Alberta privacy legislation and Alberta Health Services Clinical Information System
- Knowledge of Alberta research ethics board policies, ICH/GCP requirements and Tri‑Council policies for research involving humans is required
- Experience with academic writing (manuscripts, reports, conference presentations)
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills, attention to detail, initiative, decision‑making and problem‑troubleshooting
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple deliverables within agreed timelines, thrive and deliver results in a fast‑paced team environment
- Previous experience organizing, facilitating and chairing meetings
- Proven ability to handle sensitive issues with tact and decisiveness while maintaining confidentiality
