Description The Department of Earth, Energy & Environment in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Associate
. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Associate will support the advancement of Indigenous Science education, research, and partnerships under the direction of the PI.

The position combines three closely connected areas of responsibility:

  • Assist the PI in the development of the proposed Master of Indigenous Science program;
  • Coordination and management of collaborative research projects and research grants;
  • Active participation in interdisciplinary Indigenous Science research

The Research Associate will provide senior-level scholarly, organizational, and research support across the PI's program-development and research portfolios. The role will involve working collaboratively with Indigenous communities and organizations, Elders, Knowledge Holders, university faculty and administrators, students, government agencies, funding organizations, and national and international research partners.

Summary of

Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Master of Indigenous Science Program Development
  • Support the PI in the design, development, approval, and implementation planning of the proposed Master of Indigenous Science program.
Research Management and Grant Coordination
  • Provide research-management support for the PI's existing and emerging research projects, including projects involving national and international collaborators.
Active Research and Scholarship
  • Participate directly in the Pi's Indigenous Science research program and contribute to the design, conduct, analysis, interpretation, and communication of research.
Relationship Building and Partnership Support
  • Support the PI in building and maintaining respectful, reciprocal, and accountable relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, Knowledge Holders, researchers, students, and institutional partners.
Graduate Student Supervisory Support and Research-Team Mentorship
  • Assist in providing ongoing supervisory support for graduate students working under the PI's direction and within her broader research program. The Research Associate will work closely with students throughout the research process and, where institutionally permitted, may serve as a member of graduate student supervisory committees. Assist students with research planning, literature reviews, methods, data management, analysis, academic writing, presentations, and publication development.
During

the appointment, the Research Associate will be expected to contribute to outcomes such as:
  • Assist the PI in the advancement of the Master of Indigenous Science program through consultation, design, proposal development, and institutional review.
  • Assist in the submission of high-quality research grant applications and partnership proposals.
  • Effective coordination of active research projects and partner relationships.
  • Timely completion of funding, ethics, project, and institutional reporting requirements.
  • Production of peer-reviewed publications, reports, presentations, and community-facing research materials.
  • Assist in the facilitation and development of new national and international research collaborations.
  • Strengthened integration among the PI's research projects, students, partners, and program-development activities.
  • Increased capacity for Indigenous Science research, education, and knowledge mobilization within and beyond the University of Calgary.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • A completed PhD in a relevant field, or a combination of advanced graduate education and substantial equivalent research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting interdisciplinary research relevant to Indigenous Science, environmental science, natural resources, sustainability, water, climate, community-engaged research, or a related area.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous research methodologies, Indigenous community protocols, community-engaged research (Indigenous and non-Indigenous), research ethics (Indigenous, non-Indigenous and Our Relations), and respectful approaches to working with Indigenous communities and Knowledge Holders.
  • Experience assisting in and in the development of research proposals, grant applications, scholarly reports, manuscripts, or institutional submissions.
  • Strong project-management and organizational skills, including the ability to coordinate multiple projects, partners, deadlines, and deliverables.
  • Assist in report writing for grants, including final reports (tri-council and others).
  • Excellent academic, professional, and plain-language writing abilities.
  • Experience reviewing literature, synthesizing complex information, and translating findings into recommendations or project plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across disciplines, knowledge systems, institutions, and cultural contexts.
