Description

The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The lab is a translational research laboratory focused on the development of cellular immunotherapies for cancer and autoimmune diseases. The laboratory conducts complex preclinical and translational research involving cell-based therapies, immunological assays, viral vector production, and animal models.

The position is responsible for the generation of high-quality research data and contributes to the day-to-day operation of the laboratory. The technician independently conducts cell-based and animal studies, ensures consistency of laboratory practice, and applies specialized technical expertise to support research objectives, while contributing to a collaborative and productive research environment.

The position requires a high degree of attention to detail and technical expertise, initiative, and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Work involves handling biological specimens, animal models, viral vectors, and other research materials in compliance with institutional, ethical, and regulatory requirements. Exposure to biological, chemical, and laboratory hazards requires strict adherence to safety, biosafety, and animal care regulations.

Summary of

Key Responsibilities
  • Independently perform laboratory experiments in support of cellular immunotherapy research, including mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISAs, lentiviral vector production, and other immunological and molecular biology techniques
  • As needed, conduct animal-based research activities in accordance with approved protocols, institutional policies, and ethical standards
  • Maintain accurate and detailed experimental records, analyze and interpret data, and present results to the Principal Investigator and research team
  • Troubleshoot technical challenges, optimize experimental protocols, and contribute to the development and implementation of new standard operating procedures and laboratory workflows, and ensures consistency of practice
  • Coordinate and prioritize experimental activities across multiple projects on a regular basis, tracking progress against research timelines and resources, and adjusting plans as needed to meet objectives
  • Assist in the preparation of research reports, presentations, grant materials, manuscripts, and other scientific communications
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures, biosafety regulations, animal care protocols, and institutional policies while maintaining a clean and organized laboratory environment
  • Collaborate effectively with the Principal Investigator, laboratory personnel, trainees, and research collaborators. Draw on specialized technical knowledge to provide guidance, training, and advice to students and new staff, and to communicate complex technical information clearly through lab meetings or other presentations
  • Maintain effective working relationships with internal University stakeholders, including biosafety officers, animal care staff, and core facility personnel to support laboratory operations
Qualifications / Requirements
  • A Master of Science (MSc) or higher degree in a related field (e.g., immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry) is required
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years of relevant research laboratory experience working in an academic, biotechnology, or translational research environment is required
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian tissue culture, flow cytometry, ELISAs, and lentiviral vector production is required
  • Experience working safely with Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) materials and procedures is required
  • Experience working with mouse models and animal-based research is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience independently to perform complex laboratory procedures accurately and consistently while maintaining a high level of attention to detail
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot technical challenges, optimize experimental protocols, and exercise sound scientific judgment
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting scientific data is required
  • Ability to maintain detailed experimental records and adhere to established standard operating procedures
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with faculty, staff, trainees, and research partners
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced research environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and scientific software applications such as Flow Jo, Kaluza, Prism, or Snap Gene is required
