The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Viral Vaccines.

Job Description
The role of the Post Doctoral Fellow is to actively pursue discovery science with a co-develop a project with the PI where the project is focused in the development of viral vaccines using a ferritin nanoparticle platform. They are also responsible for establishing in partnership with the PI: a self-driven research project; career development plan; and mentoring junior lab members. They will be responsible for performing technical skills that are foundational to the project including vaccine development, virological infections, and vaccine evaluation using preclinical models and immunological assays such as Flow Cytometry and ELISA.

Specifically, the goal of this project is to develop next generation influenza vaccines using the ferritin nanoparticle system. Proficiency in specific laboratory techniques and biosafety that are essential for the project are essential skills. Communicating progress and data with the PI is also an essential responsibility.

Technical laboratory skills for include but are not limited to the following:
Design of vaccines on specific vaccine platforms, bioinformatic analysis of sequences, protein expression and isolation, viral infection procedures, immunological assays such as ELISPOT, ELISA, and Flow Cytometry Analysis.

Qualifications

PhD in biomedical research, virology, immunology, biochemistry or a related field, completed within the last 7 years (or will be completed upon PDS start date)

Strong communication skills

High level of organizational, time management and personal initiative skills
Proven ability to design and complete research studies

Experience and command of vaccine design and development

Strong understanding of virology and virological workflow

Experience with sequencing analysis software and statistical software (Geneious, Benchling, Graphpad Prism) as well as Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Strong team player

Proven ability to deliver high-quality publications and presentations

Understanding of experimental design, scientific process, and biosafety

Strong track record of publishing research findings in reputable peer reviewed journals and conference presentations

Experience in applying for grants and awards
