THERE IS A STRONG INTERNAL CANDIDATE FOR THIS POSITION.
The Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Neuroscience Research Assistant position. This Full‑time Fixed‑Term position is for approximately one year (based on the length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. The Research Assistant will report directly to the PI in the Department of Psychology and will play a central role in advancing research on neurobiological mechanisms of visual perception and perceptual learning.
The position is primarily focused on supporting data collection for various projects that use trained animal subjects. Much of the work involves hands‑on stereotaxic surgery, behavioural shaping, and neurophysiological recordings during behaviour. In addition, the candidate will support day‑to‑day operations related to ordering and managing supplies, training personnel, and animal welfare. The position requires strong analytical ability, independence, and the capacity to manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast‑paced, collaborative research environment.
Comfort with computer programming and/or a moderate level of computer fluency is highly desirable. Occasional weekend work may be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Assisting with experiments by surgically preparing subjects and training animals in behavioural tasks.
- Coordinating with other lab members whose projects involve behavioural experiments.
- Performing neurophysiological recordings in trained, behaving subjects.
- Training new lab members in lab procedures.
- Histology.
- Equipment maintenance.
- Ensuring lab‑wide compliance with safety protocols, laboratory regulations, and institutional policies.
- Managing the animal colony.
- Maintaining adequate stocks of essential laboratory reagents.
- BSc in Neuroscience, Psychology, or Biology.
- 1–2 years of laboratory experience.
- Experience with behavioural shaping in rodent models.
- Experience with stereotaxic surgery, AAV injections, and neurophysiology.
- Ability to work collaboratively and provide technical support for team members.
- Knowledge of basic histological procedures.
- Ability and openness to learning new skills and incorporating constructive feedback throughout training.
- Excellent communication, listening, and organisational skills.
